Flying Her Future: Pathways in Aviation – Round Two ✈️✨

This term we proudly launched the next round of our Women in Aviation program in partnership with Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP), expanding to five days of immersive industry exposure for ten female students in Years 10 to 12.

Like last time, we kicked things off at TAFE Tighes Hill with hands‑on sessions in Avionics, Mechanical and Structures, showcasing the three pathways offered through HunterNet and our host employer, BAE Systems.
This all came to life for the students when we visited BAE Systems in the following days, where they saw their new knowledge in action, observing skilled tradesmen and women, engaging in meaningful conversations with current apprentices, and even having the chance to use the Hawk Flight Simulator.
Building on the success of our first program last term, we expanded this round to five immersive days, including visits to Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Rathmines Catalina Association (Keep an eye on our socials as more photos are to come!), along with a Job Ready workshop focused on resumes, transferable skills and early aviation career planning, delivered by our Pathways and Engagement Officer.

Empowering the next generation of women in aviation is a journey we’re proud to continue. The sky isn’t the limit, it’s just the beginning.

Over the last two weeks, 10 students from the Newcastle North region have taken part in the Engineering Educational Pathways Program (EPP), delivered by HunterNet in partnership with Major Training. As part of this pre‑apprenticeship skills course, students completed formal training and units of competency at Major Training, gaining valuable industry knowledge and hands‑on skills that can contribute toward future studies in the engineering industry.

They then continued their learning through industry immersion days with our host companies, UGL and Downer, where they experienced what life on the job looks like for our apprentices, school‑based trainees and other qualified trades people, explored different career pathways and opportunities available, and took part in additional hands‑on activities.

With one final immersion day still to come at Downer EDI, the program is wrapping up soon, and we’re excited to see where these new skills and experiences take the students next!🙌
