The Centre for Water, Climate and Land (CWCL) is a partnership led by the University of Newcastle and Alluvium Consulting Australia (https://www.alluvium.com.au/). The CWCL focuses on understanding and dealing with the impacts of climate variability and change in the Asia-Pacific region. droughts, floods, bushfires, tropical cyclones, and East Coast Lows) and how these may change in the future. Ot

her areas of expertise include characterising impacts of climate variability and change, seasonal/interannual hydroclimate forecasting, extreme event risk analysis, hydrological modelling, stochastic modelling, water resources management and climate-smart agriculture. CWCL is also involved in a wide range of consulting projects where insights into the impacts of climate variability and change are used to enable stakeholders from public and private sector organisations to better assess their climate related risks. This information is then used to develop more informed climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. The CWCL also has a focus on education and capacity building in the fields of water, climate and land/soil through professional development, undergraduate training and PhD/Masters research supervision. Our paper published this week reviewed the relationship between mental health, wellbeing and drought resilience in rural, regional and remote communities. We found there is a lack of tools and resources that (a) recognise when people need help and (b) efficiently connect people to help that is available at the time the help is required. Our findings have informed the development of an online wellbeing toolkit... stay tuned!

At Careers With STEM (www.careerswithstem.com.au) we take a STEM topic (like maths), and combine it with your passion, hobby, or a growing field (like climate change), to showcase potential career paths. A perfect example is Danielle Udy, antarctic climatologist and University of Tasmania researcher using maths to help work out the impact of climate change and climate variability on climatic events such as flood, drought, bushfire and sea-level rise. Read Danielle's inspiring career story:
