🧊 Almost $15K. Lots of ice. One big fight. 💙
Things got very chilly at Port Waratah recently, in support of FightMND!

With an initial target of $5,000, raised across eight events over 4 dates on two sites, almost 70 Port Waratah employees and valued contractor partners took the plunge and got the bucket. Together, we raised just under $15,000 for vital research and support services for people living with MND.

To everyone who purchased merchandise or snacks, volunteered their time to help with our events, cheered on from the sidelines or bravely volunteered to get very, very wet… we thank you!🥶👏💙

***Flashback Friday*** 🔥August 1, 1978, a fire broke out during repairs to the newly constructed Carrington Wharf facilities🔥The blaze started at the northern shiploader and flashed back along the conveyor belt systems and a transfer house. As reported by the Newcastle Sun, it was feared that workers might have been trapped, but thankfully no-one was injured in the outbreak.

Tugboats helped battle the blaze seaside while more than 40 firemen from six brigades and our own response unit worked landside to control the blaze and stop it from spreading. The shiploading head collapsed and the boom plunged into the harbour. It was estimated at more than $1 million in damages at the time.

The $1 million quoted in the article would equate to more than $6.7 million in damages today.

Well done to the team for getting behind our second series of Ice Bucket Challenge events, in support of people living with MND. We welcomed the Lord Mayor Mr Gavin Morris for a visit to our Kooragang Terminal. Our CEO Mr Hennie du Plooy was delighted to host the Lord Mayor and provide an overview of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain and a site tour of our operations, and to discuss the investment in and future outlook of Port Waratah operations. The Lord Mayor observed the train receival stations, explored a reclaimer at work in the coal stockyard and met some of the Operations team responsible for loading the vessels at the wharf. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Lord Mayor and showcase our operations.

“Seeing the scale of the operations up close and getting an insight into the coordination and planning from pit to port was impressive,” said Lord Mayor, Mr Morris.

Harnessing the wind to reduce emissions. 🌏💨A different kind of sail has arrived in the Port of Newcastle.

The MV Yodohime, loading coal at Port Waratah, has been fitted with a 24-metre Norsepower Rotor Sail™ – an innovative wind propulsion system that uses AI and real-time weather data to capture the power of the wind and help propel the vessel.

The Magnus effect generated when wind meets the rotating cylindrical sail produces a powerful thrust which, combined with voyage optimisation technology, is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by around 6–10%.

It's another example of how innovation is helping drive more sustainable global shipping and supporting the industry's journey towards lower emissions.
