The amount of pushback we get around building better homes is pretty interesting.

We’re not saying every house in Australia needs to be a Passive House. But surely we should be aiming for more than just meeting the minimum standard?

Better insulation, airtightness, windows, ventilation and moisture management. These are all things that make a home more comfortable, cheaper to run and less likely to have issues down the track.

What’s frustrating is the attitude from some people in the industry who seem completely unwilling to consider that there might be a better way of doing things.

Just because we’ve been building a certain way for decades doesn’t mean we should keep doing it that way. Especially when we know some of the problems those building methods can create.

Every industry moves forward as people learn, question things and improve. But that’s pretty difficult when the attitude is that anything beyond the minimum code is unnecessary or a waste of money.

We’re still learning ourselves, and there’s plenty we can improve on. We certainly don’t have all the answers.

But surely being open to learning and building better homes should be something everyone in this industry is working towards.

A pretty special result for our Coal Point project over the weekend at the 2026 HIA Hunter Housing Awards.

We picked up Bathroom over $45,000, and then went on to take out Bathroom of the Year overall.

A lot of work went into this one, so it’s great to see it recognised at that level.

Thanks to all the suppliers, subbies and everyone involved in bringing it together.

If you’re still fixing cladding directly to your wall wrap, it’s probably time to rethink how you’re building.

Ventilated cavities have been used overseas for decades, yet we’re only just starting to see them become more common here in Australia.

The idea is pretty simple. Give moisture somewhere to drain and allow the wall to dry out, rather than trapping it behind the cladding.

It’s not a new concept, and there’s really no reason it shouldn’t be standard practice by now.

A look at the finished exterior of our Coal Point project.

Really happy with how this one came together, and to top it off, the project recently picked up two awards at the MBA Hunter Awards for the kitchen and bathroom.

This project was a high-performance custom home build, with a focus on airtightness, insulation and energy efficiency. A lot of what makes a home perform well isn’t necessarily visible once it’s finished.

This isn’t about having a go at designers or architects. There are plenty doing great work.

It’s frustrating seeing clients come to us with plans they’ve already spent months on, only to find out the home is nowhere near the budget they started with.

Sometimes it feels like the cost of actually building the thing has been left too late in the process.

Whether that’s because someone is out of touch with current construction costs, or simply hasn’t had enough input from a builder, the result is the same.

The client ends up disappointed, the design has to be reworked, and a lot of time and money has already been spent.

That’s why I think builders need to be involved much earlier.

If you’re planning a build, speak to a builder first, or make sure your designer is working closely with one from the start.

And if you’re a designer or architect who wants another set of eyes on budget or buildability, we’re always happy to help.

We’ve had the Hilti SM 60-22 cordless drop saw set up on site the last few days.

It’s smooth on the rails, easy to adjust and the Nuron batteries have held up well for the sort of cuts we’ve been doing.

We’ve partnered with Hilti Australia 🇦🇺 this year, so we’ll keep sharing more as we put the gear to work. Good bit of gear.

Months without the flashing probably isn’t something we’d recommend, but when you’re a builder building your own house in your spare time, mainly on weekends, sometimes it’s unavoidable.

But it does give us a pretty good real world example of why we don’t rely on the flashing or roof sheeting alone to keep water out.

Underneath the roof sheeting we’ve got a continuous membrane and drained cavity, so if any water does get through, it’s got a path to drain back out rather than finding its way into the house.

The flashing is still important, it’s just not our one and only line of defence if it ever does fail.

We’ve built plenty of high-performance homes over the years, but building our own place gave us the chance to push things a little further.

It’s been an opportunity to put more of the Passive House principles we talk about into practice, refine the way we approach the details, and keep learning along the way.

For us, high-performance building isn’t really about ticking a box or chasing a label.

It’s about building homes that are more comfortable, more efficient and better suited to the way we actually live in Australia.

There’s still plenty to learn, and that’s a big part of why we keep sharing the process.

A pretty solid result from our first blower door test at Solura.

A typical 7-star home can sit around 7–9 air changes per hour at 50Pa. For Passive House certification, the finished home needs to achieve 0.6 ACH50 or lower.

Solura came in at 0.42 ACH50.

And we’re not finished yet.

There are still a few areas we can tighten up before the gyprock goes on, so we’re confident there’s more in it.

The number is one thing, but testing at this stage also gives us the chance to find any weak points while we can still do something about them.
