Project Update | Mercy Place, East Melbourne VIC

Refurbishment works are progressing well at Mercy Health’s residential aged care facility in East Melbourne, where the Total Special Projects team in Victoria are delivering upgrades designed to enhance the comfort and experience of residents.

A key challenge of the project has been completing construction works within a fully operational aged care environment. Drawing on extensive experience working in high-risk live environments, the team has successfully managed works while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of residents, staff and visitors.

Key measures onsite include:
• Hoarding off all work zones to separate residents and staff from construction activities.
• Proactively managing noise and dust.
• Regular toolbox talks focused on the sensitivities of working within an occupied aged care facility.
• Staging works to ensure social activities and communal events can continue, while allowing residents to enjoy newly completed areas as soon as they become available.

Residents have taken a genuine interest in the project, enjoying the opportunity to watch the transformation unfold. The reception upgrade is the centrepiece of the current stage of works, and both residents and staff are looking forward to the completion of this welcoming new environment.

Excellent work to the team of Mathew Cripps, Adrian Ng and Josh George in managing this complex delivery.

Our Cadets recently sat down with Managing Director Steve Taylor for a quarterly leadership session focused on career growth and leadership development.

Steve reflected on his journey from apprentice to business leader, sharing the experiences, challenges and lessons that shaped his career and ultimately led to the beginning of Total Construction in partnership with Bill Franks.

These sessions provide a valuable opportunity for cadets to learn directly from experienced leaders, talk openly about industry challenges, and contribute ideas that help strengthen our business.

Steve discussed the importance of maintaining balance while managing the pressures and deadlines that often exist in the construction industry. The group also explored the value of building strong relationships and networks throughout their careers.

Jonathan Barnes: 10 Years Strong

We're proud to celebrate Jonathan Barnes' 10-year anniversary with Total Construction.

Since joining as Leading Hand, Jono has built a reputation for his practical expertise, strong work ethic and hands-on approach to every project.

A key career milestone was leading the Moyne Aged Care project in Canowindra, NSW as Site Foreman. Working in a rural location reinforced the importance of planning ahead, being adaptable and building strong relationships with local trades.

Jono also played an important role on the Kennards Self Storage Minto project, overseeing works from site establishment and demolition through to final handover.

Known for rolling up his sleeves and supporting those around him, Jono's dedication and team-first attitude have made a lasting impact over the past decade.

Outside of work, Jono is a proud father of two girls and enjoys spending time with them bike riding, fishing, gardening and cooking.

Thank you, Jono, for your loyalty and contribution over the past 10 years.

Congratulations on this outstanding milestone, and we look forward to many more years of success together.
