Some of the biggest decisions in a facility project happen before the first drawing.

Site selection, operational needs, budget assumptions and approval pathways all shape cost, timing and how well the building serves your business.

Before committing, ask:

• What must the facility support today and as we grow?
• What site constraints could affect design or cost?
• Does the budget cover the whole project?
• What could delay approvals or construction?
• Who is accountable for delivery?

Resolving these questions early helps prevent assumptions becoming expensive changes later.

At Steelcorp, we help clients work through this planning stage, often before a site is secured or a formal brief exists.

Planning a facility? You don’t need a finished brief to start a useful conversation. Get in touch with our team today.

How much steel does a school shade structure actually need?

The answer depends on more than the size of the area you want to cover. Column spacing, roof geometry, structural sections and connection details all influence how efficiently a covered outdoor learning area, or COLA, can be built.

When engineering and fabrication are considered together from the start, there are opportunities to reduce unnecessary steel and make better use of the budget.

At Steelcorp, our in-house engineering team works through the design from the initial brief to fabrication drawings. Through this process, we routinely reduce structural steel by 20 to 30% compared with conventional approaches, without compromising span, strength or safety.

That percentage relates to the amount of structural steel used. The overall project saving will depend on the site, design and scope.

For a school, those savings could help fund a larger covered area, seating, flooring or lighting.

If you’re planning a COLA, three useful questions to ask are:

• Has the structure been engineered for our site and intended use?
• Have the engineering and fabrication teams worked together to identify efficiencies?
• Could a different structural layout deliver the same usable space with less material?

An efficiently designed structure can help your budget deliver more for students, from everyday outdoor learning to assemblies and wet-weather play.

For self-storage developers, the gap between a viable concept and an operating asset is where projects get complicated. Multiple consultants, disconnected packages, and no single point of accountability when things don't go to plan.

Steelcorp closes that gap. As a turnkey design and construct partner, we carry the project from site through to completion, managing design, engineering, approvals, fabrication, and installation as a single coordinated scope. One contract, one point of contact, one team accountable for the outcome from the first conversation to the day the doors open.

From site to operating asset, one accountable partner.

A new double-court COLA has taken shape at St Josephine Bakhita Catholic Primary School in Clyde North, delivered by Steelcorp in partnership with BowdenCorp.

Our full design and construction scope covered the footings, structural steel system, soffit lining, skylights and protective side skirts. Each element was coordinated through one accountable team, from early design through to installation.

The curved form gives the structure a distinct architectural presence. Its lasting value will be measured in the practical, durable space it provides the school community every day. A considered result, delivered as promised.

Look out for a full case study on this project, coming soon.

Announcing our latest self-storage project in California Gully, VIC. 5 buildings. 161 storage units and a dedicated office.

We’re underway on a new self-storage development for a client who has built with us before. They came back for one reason. They wanted a single partner across the whole job.

That means design and engineering management, structural steel fabrication and er****on, wall and roof cladding, the roller door package, precast and foundations. All coordinated under one roof and taken through to lock-up.

Repeat clients know exactly what they’re getting. They’ve seen how we deliver, and they’ve chosen to do it again. That’s the standard on every Steelcorp site.

More to come as the build progresses.

A competitive quote is not always a complete project cost. When budgeting for a new facility, the figure on the page is only as reliable as the scope behind it.

Civil works. Service upgrades. Compliance requirements. Approval conditions. Each can affect the final cost if it hasn’t been properly considered upfront.

A useful question to ask before committing capital is: “What still needs to be resolved?”

Start with these five areas:

• Operational requirements: Does the design account for how your business will use the facility, including access, equipment and workflow?

• Site conditions: What is known about ground conditions, levels, drainage and the civil works required?

• Services: Can existing power, water and sewer connections support the proposed use, or are upgrades needed?

• Approvals and compliance: Which requirements are confirmed, and which could still affect the design or budget?

• Inclusions and exclusions: What is covered, what is allowed for, and what remains your responsibility?

Unresolved assumptions can become additional costs once delivery begins. Comparing quotes on a consistent scope gives you a clearer basis for deciding which proposal offers value.

At Steelcorp, we work through these details upfront so clients understand the broader project cost before construction starts. Cost certainty starts with clarity. The more you resolve early, the better informed your investment decision.

A strong team makes all the difference on site.

Steelcorp is pleased to welcome Junior Salman who joins as our new NSW Site Supervisor. Junior will help keep our NSW projects moving, coordinating work on site with a focus on safety, quality and clear communication.

It’s a role that calls for ownership and attention to detail, two things that matter at every stage of a Steelcorp build.

Good to have you on board, Junior. Looking forward to building together.

A big lift for All Saints Anglican School in Shepparton.

The roof lift marks a significant step forward for the school’s new double court COLA, taking shape in partnership with Keyystone Building Group. Steelcorp is delivering the foundations, structural steel, roof and wall cladding, and bird proofing.

Once complete, the space will give students year-round weather protection and room for sport, assemblies and school events.

At schools across Australia, how many days this term were lost to rain, heat, or glare that made the outdoor space unusable? For most, the answer is more than it should be. PE gets cancelled. Lunch supervision squeezes back inside. Outdoor learning that should happen doesn't, because there's nowhere comfortable to do it.

We've spent years working with schools on covered outdoor learning areas, sports covers and shade structures, and the patterns are consistent. The schools that get the most out of these spaces are the ones that think it through properly before committing, not after.

Steelcorp designs, fabricates and constructs these structures end to end, one team from first idea to handover. If you're weighing this up for your school, get in touch with our team today.
