Amity Builders Building comfortable, mould-free custom homes that last || Passivhaus and high performance builder

Since starting Amity I’ve been head down, committed and focussed on wanting to “do” building differently.

At first that looked like producing truly high quality work, the kind I’ve always loved doing but didn’t always get to do.

Then Passivhaus found me, and everything I knew about building was flipped upside down. My standard of “quality” shifted instantly and I quickly committed to never working against the science of building again.

But construction is only one part of the equation. People is the other. Wanting to give our clients and employees a great experience required great systems in place.

Levelling up our professionalism and taking ourselves seriously, not just for our craft, but for the end-to-end service we offer, has meant investing time into learning new sets of skills constantly.

I’m still far from working this whole business thing out, but one thing I do know is that every day, with every new teammate, project and partnership, the vision of “doing” building differently gets clearer and clearer.

Feeling incredibly grateful for every step, setback and success that has led us to celebrating five years.

It would be impossible without the team’s support, our clients’ belief in us, and mates and mentors who are always a phone call away when I don’t have the answers.

Happy birthday Amity!

Food for thought 💭

Maybe you’ve come to terms with the cockroaches that visit each summer.

Maybe you live in an old house and think finally renovating will solve the problem.

But the truth is?

These creepy crawlers are just as likely to make themselves known in renovated and new homes we see around.

That’s because the problem isn’t just cracks and gaps for them to get through. It’s the moisture that’s trapped in the walls, creating the *perfect* environment for cockroaches to live and breed.

The moment we started demoing the wardrobe, there it was.

Black mould, living inside the wall cavity. But that’s no surprise, seeing how 50% of Aussies have reported mould or dampness in their home.

We’ve cleaned visible mould off the walls more than once, and painted over it hoping to make us feel better. All the while knowing that no amount of clove oil or mould killer would fix the root cause.

Because what you see here is a building problem.

And it’s happening inside walls all over Australia, in homes where nobody has looked behind the walls.

Swipe through to see why.

A glimpse into final stages at Oceana Passivhaus.

Here’s what you don’t see:
🌱 A home that stays between 20 and 25 degrees year-round with minimal heating and cooling
🌱 Less cleaning thanks to surfaces that stay dust-free for longer
🌱 No fear of mould growing in the back of the closet or the corner of the shower

Sadly, what sounds like bare minimum is far from the standard of new homes in Australia.

Sadly, we’ve learned to prioritise fancy finishes and larger homes over our comfort and wellbeing.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Most homes leak. You feel it as winter drafts, stuffy summer rooms, dust that keeps coming back, and power bills that never quite add up.

The catch is you can’t see air sneaking through gaps in your walls, floors and ceilings. So it goes unchecked for the life of the home.

A blower door test ends the guessing. We seal a powerful fan into a doorway and use it to draw air out of the house.

Then we measure exactly how much leaks back in through every crack and gap. Not an estimate. A hard number.

The Passivhaus standard asks for 0.6 air changes per hour or lower.

We hit 0.16 🎉

What does this actually look like? Our total leakage area measured 0.006 square metres. Basically if you add up every gap, crack and join across the entire home, it comes out to a single hole about the size of a round drink coaster.

One coaster… across a two-storey house!

A typical new build? Closer to leaving a window wide open. All day, every day.
Airtight homes are quieter, cleaner, more comfortable and far cheaper to run.

This is what building to actually perform looks like.

Most people think comfort comes from luxurious finishes and furnishings.

But real comfort is more subtle.

It feels like cleaner air.

Stable temperatures.

Better sleep.

The best homes don’t just look good. They change how life feels inside them.

Real comfort isn’t a finish, it’s a feeling.
