🔎 What is journal club?
A bimonthly event where Monash med students and/or clinician researchers present their own research or a paper that interests them. We typically have 1 student-researcher and 1 clinician-researcher presenter.

Following presentations, there will be time for participants to ask the presenters questions, ranging from “how did you collect this data” to “how did you start getting involved in research?” and “how important is research for this specialty?”

💙🔬 MRSS Applications open: Preclinical Research Newsletter Team 💙🔬

Are you a Year 1 or Year 2 medical student curious about research but not sure where to start?

Applications are now OPEN for the MRSS Preclinical Research Newsletter Team. This a new initiative designed to make research more accessible, relevant, and engaging for preclinical students.

As part of this team, you’ll:
• Break down recent, high-impact research papers into clear, digestible summaries
• Develop skills in critical appraisal and scientific communication
• Help design and shape a brand-new MRSS newsletter
• Highlight research opportunities available to students like you
• Work in a collaborative team to make research feel less intimidating and more achievable

This is a great opportunity if you want to:
✔ Build early research literacy (without needing prior experience)
✔ Strengthen your CV for future research or BMedSc (Hons)
✔ Learn how to think like a clinician-scientist early on
✔ Get involved in MRSS in a meaningful, low-pressure way

We’re looking for students who are:
• Organised and proactive
• Curious and willing to learn
• Interested in communicating ideas clearly and creatively
• Keen to make research more engaging for their peers

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday evening!

We were incredibly fortunate to hear from five expert speakers Dr Chris Chew (joining us virtually), Dr Jonathan Hyer, Dr Andrew Gauden, Dr Emily Whalen, and Dr Ish*th Seth, who generously shared their journeys through research. From navigating networking with potential supervisors to choosing meaningful research topics and building skills beyond medical school, their insights were invaluable.

A special shoutout to our MRSS members Aidi, Damian, and Trisha for their dedication in bringing this event together. And thank you to Anoushka, Mehri, and Wendy for their support on the night 🤍

Looking forward to seeing where everyone’s research journeys take them next!
