“Battery ready” and “shore power ready” may sound like simple add-ons. They can raise questions about electrical architecture, location and space
reservations, ventilation, fire safety, weight and future equipment interfaces.

DNV’s July 2026 rule update includes new related notations, but requirements vary by ship and class. Early design-stage clarification is cheaper to organise than a rushed late-stage assumption.

DNV’s 2027-effective class-rule update is a reminder to agree the applicable design basis early. Ask the naval architect and the chosen classification society what applies to your build, rather than guessing.

An engineering RFQ should not force a supplier to guess the assignment. Define: (1) vessel type and stage; (2) governing standards and design basis; (3) requested deliverables and drawing status; (4) yard/vendor inputs and responsibilities; (5) review gates, schedule and change control.

Better scoping improves technical comparison of proposals. Message “RFQ” for our editable one-page scope checklist.

A LATE CHANGE IS RARELY ISOLATED.

Moving equipment can affect foundations, access, wiring, piping and weight estimates.

The risk is not merely redrawing a line. It's identifying every affected interface before production proceeds.

A well-managed change process should capture the reason for the change, affected engineering disciplines, drawing revisions, responsible owner and production impact.

Shipyard owners, project managers and production teams: Where do late design changes create the biggest problems for your projects?

Let's discuss how better engineering coordination can help identify potential issues before they reach the production floor.

A commercial vessel is rarely just a vessel.
A CTV supports technicians keeping offshore wind farms operating.
A crew boat moves people and equipment supporting offshore energy.
A ferry connects communities, workplaces and transport networks.
A workboat helps ports, contractors and marine industries get work done.

Behind every vessel is a larger economic activity.
That is why vessel design matters.
Reliability affects operations.
Efficiency affects economics.
Safety affects people.
Capacity affects productivity.

And good engineering influences all of them.

Our three lobsters may spend most of their time arguing about drawings, spreadsheets and operating assumptions.

But the bigger picture is simple:
Stronger vessels support stronger operations.
Stronger operations support stronger industries.

Monday Morning Wisdom,

Every vessel begins somewhere.
A conversation.
A sketch.
A requirement.
A route problem.
A new contract.
An operator asking:
“Could we do this better?”

Then the engineering begins.
Concept.
Design.
Approval.
Construction.
Testing.
Commissioning.
Operation.

The important part is that the idea survives that entire journey.
A beautiful concept drawing means very little if the vessel cannot be built economically.

A technically clever vessel means little if it does not work for the operator.

Good design connects the two.
Ideas on paper should eventually create measurable impact on the water.
That is where engineering becomes valuable.

The vessel may remain in service for decades.
The operating environment will not.
Regulations change.
Technology changes.
Energy systems change.
Routes change.
Passenger expectations change.
Charter requirements change.
Markets change.

The Smug Consultant would probably ask:
“So why are we designing only for today?”

Flexibility does not mean trying to design one vessel that does everything.

It means understanding where future change is likely and making sensible decisions today that preserve tomorrow’s options.
Sometimes that might involve layout.
Sometimes electrical architecture.
Sometimes propulsion readiness.
Sometimes additional space or structural allowance.

Future-proofing is not predicting the future perfectly.
It is avoiding unnecessary dead ends.

The sustainability conversation in marine is often dominated by propulsion.

But it starts much earlier.
Hull efficiency.
Weight.
Operating profile.
Speed requirements.
Route characteristics.
Power demand.
Propulsion selection.
Fuel consumption.
Future energy options.

Every one of these begins with design decisions.
There is no single solution that fits every vessel.

A ferry operating short urban crossings has different priorities from a CTV operating offshore or a crew boat supporting oil and gas operations.

That is why the first sustainability question should not necessarily be:

“Which technology should we use?”
It may be:
“What does this vessel actually need to accomplish?”

Efficiency begins with understanding the mission.

A vessel can look impressive and still frustrate everyone who works aboard it.
Why?
Because functionality lives in the details.

Can equipment be moved easily?
Can the crew reach what they need?
Are working areas properly arranged?
Can cargo operations happen without creating unnecessary disruption?

Are access routes clear?
Does the layout support the actual workflow?
The Anxious Overachiever has a point:
It is not just about what fits. It is about how it works.

Good layout design can support:
Safer operations.
Faster turnaround.
Better crew efficiency.
Less unnecessary movement.
Higher vessel utilisation.

The drawing shows where everything goes.
The operation tells you whether it was placed in the right location.

Calm conditions.

The sea has apparently not received the spreadsheet.
This is where our Anxious Overachiever becomes particularly nervous.

On paper, operating assumptions can look beautifully controlled.

Payload.
Speed.
Weather window.
Fuel consumption.
Journey time.
Sea state.

Then the vessel enters the real world.
That does not make modelling useless.
It means the model needs to reflect reality as closely as possible.

Good naval architecture connects calculations with actual operating conditions.

Because eventually every assumption meets the same examiner:
The sea.
And the sea does not care how good the spreadsheet looks.
