What's the worst that could happen to a sculpture while being transported? Well, back in 2019, an artist had made a maquette, a model, that they wanted scaled up for a much larger commission. However, the challenge started when we opened the box from the post and saw broken pieces.

Challenge:

This artistic piece was fragile and unfortunately, there is always a risk when using a courier or posting these types of pieces. It wasn’t just chipped either it was in pieces. The sculpture was handmade and had taken the sculptor weeks of perfecting for the commission – but now we were out of time. The sculpture had to be machined, finished and delivered. The deadline was looming.

Solution:

We could have sent the maquette back, there were multiple broken pieces but after taking a closer look at the handmade sculpture we noticed that the the breaks were clean and there was a possibility we could scan it after all.

Our arm based scanner was used to 3D scan each piece. Data processing took on a whole new meaning though as each piece was turned into a mesh and digitally put back together. Once together the part was ready for scaling up and machining!

Results:

The broken sculpture was 3d scanned and digitally brought back to life using the Geomagic suite of software. It’s not often the engineers get to be creative but we managed to digitally recreate the sculpture and meet the tight deadline.

Parts damaged beyond repair?
Our client was restoring a brotherhood crocker truck gear box housing, but some parts were damaged beyond repair with no way to source them. Manufacturing this part used the best of modern technology and traditional manufacturing methods.

Challenge

An ambitious project of fully restoring an early 20th century Brotherhood Crocker Truck hit a obstacle when the owner discovered a damaged gear box housing beyond repair. With nothing in the way of spare parts to source, the decision was made to manufacture a new housing utilising the best of modern technologies and abilities.

Solution

Wysiwyg3D were enlisted to 3D laser scan the existing gear box housing using our Kreon Arm. Once scanned, the decision was made to 3D model a new version of the gear box housing that would both look like the original, but, would also remedy the issues present in the original that led to its failure. Metal thicknesses could be improved and made consistent, along with minor improvements to internal design aiding strength in the areas of issue. All improvements could be made and visualised in the 3D space. This was important so that the overall look could be maintained while incorporating the improvements learned in the manufacturing industry over the past century. Only when the owner was 100% satisfied that all criteria were part of the new housing were ready to proceed to the next stage.

Results

To ensure the housing maintained the visual aspects of the original components, the owner decided to have traditional timber tooling produced by a Patternmaker from the new 3d CAD Model. The tooling was then supplied to an Aluminium Foundry to make the best quality castings available. With the improvements in technique coupled with the step up in metal quality over the past 100 years, the Foundry was able to produce a casting that was not only of the highest integrity, but was very much a match visually with the original.

The majority of work we complete at Wysiwyg 3D is 3D scanning, specifically for manufacturing plants that need upgrades. Basically, we are engineers who specialise in 3D scanning, so we understand what other engineers may need out of their data.

These plants work with 3 main components: physical infrastructure such as a warehouse, capital equipment such as the machinery, and the workforce such as technical personnel.

When the manufacturing plant needs to expand, for example by adding a new product line, exact data on the current plant is needed. Wysiwyg 3D specialises in providing exact spatial data, an intricate digital version of the plant which includes measurements that you can access and manipulate from anywhere.
