First look at Binar-5, -6, and -7!

Fresh out on the bench, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the next trio of Binar satellites coming together side by side. These spacecraft represent the continued evolution of the Binar program and a huge amount of effort across design, manufacturing, and integration.

A massive thank you to AVI Pty Ltd for their radio hardware and deep expertise, and to Element Engineering Australia and Advanced Technology & Manufacturing WA for their outstanding manufacturing capability and support. This kind of collaboration is what makes missions like this possible.

Excited to see what’s next as we move closer to flight.

BinarX Kicks Off 2026 with a Stellar New Format!

On January 31st, we wrapped up the BinarX January School Holiday Program. Returning for its 3rd year, this was our first time running a five‑day format and welcoming Year 5 and 6 students into our challenging, intensive, and FUN hands-on rocket payload engineering and launch program.

Across the week, students amazed us with their enthusiasm, creativity and curiosity. From soldering their own functioning payloads to designing 3D printed components in TinkerCAD and launching rockets carrying real flight‑data payloads, these young engineers absolutely shone.

A massive thank‑you to our incredible facilitators and mentors from the Binar Space Program at , PAST - Perth Aerospace Student Team , and BinarX Student Payload Development Program alumni from Balcatta Senior High School and Bob Hawke College .

The network of facilitators and mentors all worked together to guide the participants throughout the program and beautifully highlighted the pipeline of mentorship, pathways and opportunities across multiple stages of the growing space sector in Western Australia.

We’re also deeply grateful for the generous support of our partners, without whom the program would not be possible. We extend our gratitude to the Fogarty Foundation , Curtin University School of Earth and Planetary Sciences .eps.rocks, Andrew Hannah and the team at Curtin University STEM Outreach , and Curtin University Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer.

We’re excited to take the program to Kalgoorlie in July 2026, with plans to expand further into regional WA. And we’re already looking ahead to Perth in January 2027!

This week, WA students are designing, building and launching their own rockets and payloads — all while we count down to the ISS deployment of the first WA high‑school‑built payloads on Binar‑5.
Our Y5–6 rocket program is running for the first time ever, and we’re so excited to see what they create!

Huge thanks to our mentors from the Binar Space Program, , and our amazing peer mentors from Balcatta SHS and Bob Hawke College.

Thank you to our supporters:

One year ago today we deployed Binar-2, 3 & 4 into Orbit from the ISS.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t make their own party to blow out the candles.

RIP. They went to space, did some laps, set themselves on fire. Gone but not forgotten.

A huge stepping stone to our future mission ambitions!

We’re so proud to see one of our brilliant BinarX students featured in this article from Bhutan’s national newspaper.

Through her experiences in the BinarX Student Payload Development Program and the BinarX School Holiday Program (supported by the Fogarty Foundation, .eps.rocks Curtin Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS), and Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation), Balcatta Senior High School Pema has been building her knowledge in space mission design, systems engineering, electronics, and data handling. Along the way, she’s also developed valuable skills in design, communications, and project management—working as part of a multidisciplinary team of young innovators to design, prototype, test and build space-ready payloads for the next Binar CubeSat mission.

The students across 9 WA high schools are now in the final stretch, preparing for their Test Readiness Review in June 2025, when they’ll hand over their payloads to the Binar Space Program engineers (to join the BinarX pilot school John Curtin College of the Arts’ UV-sensing payload handed over at the end of last year) for space environment testing and integration into the next Binar CubeSat mission which is scheduled to launch at the end of next year.

Space has always been a powerful connector, and this program is a great reminder that innovation knows no borders. Having a student from Bhutan contributing to an Australian space mission speaks volumes about the impact of international collaboration in STEM. We’re incredibly lucky to be part of her journey—and can’t wait to see where it takes her next.

MISSION ALERT! HAB03 PYROMANTIS TO LAUNCH FROM WAROONA, WA THIS WEEK*

We hope to be launching our 3rd Binar Space Program High Altitude Balloon Pyromantis payload from Waroona Rec Centre Oval on the morning of Friday, March 21st 2025.  The balloon will then fly over the beautiful Western Australia Jarrah-Mallee forest.  🌳🌳

The launch date coincides with the United Nations International Day of Forests. Very fitting for our Pyromantis payload, which will be capturing imagery to measure the health and moisture content of the forest.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

🎈Come join us in person at the Waroona Rec Centre Oval for some hands-on activities for primary school aged children and HAB enthusiasts of all ages, including activity worksheets, balloon paper plate crafts, and a live high altitude balloon launch! (Tentative itinerary below)

🛜 You can also track our balloon flight and chase car position online** via SondeHub Amateur (https://amateur.sondehub.org/) and searching for callsign BINAR for our balloon (this will be activated when our radiosonde tracker is activated just before we launch) and BINAR_chase (or something similar) for our chase car.

TENTATIVE LAUNCH AGENDA *MAY CHANGE DUE TO WEATHER*

7:15 AM - Outreach activities available to the general public, including activity worksheets and balloon paper plate crafts
7:45 AM - Begin filling the balloon
8:00 AM - Launch 🎈
8:15 AM - Launch completed
8.15 - 8.30 AM - Binar Space Program team members available to chat and answer questions
8:30 AM - Team leaves to chase the balloon

*As it is weather dependent this could still be delayed to later in the day, or be shifted altogether.
Please keep checking back on or https://padlet.com/eriita/binar_hab03 for the most up to date information.

**If you wish to follow the path of the balloon flight please do so online! But do not under any circumstances enter private property or dangerous areas.

🚀 The BinarX School Holiday Program has soared to new heights in 2025!

This year, we welcomed 18 students from 11 WA high schools for an immersive, hands-on experience in payload engineering and rocketry. Over 10 intensive days, students:

✅ Designed, built, and launched custom rockets & payloads
✅ Learned hardware, software & coding principles (C++)
✅ Worked with real space simulation equipment
✅ Showcased their work to peers, families & mentors

A huge thank you to the , the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, and .eps.rocks Curtin Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) for their support!
