Another important milestone for our Hermosa project in Arizona last week: the signing of the Mine Plan of Operations by the U.S. Forest Service completes the federal permitting process and authorises activities on federal Forest Service land.

As the first mining project added to and completed through the federal FAST-41 permitting program, Hermosa has helped demonstrate how major projects can progress through a rigorous and transparent federal review process.

Hermosa is currently the only advanced mine development project in the United States with the potential to produce up to five federally designated critical minerals, including zinc and manganese, that are essential to energy infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.

When our FY26 CEO Safety Guarantee Champions were seeking to address safety risks in a routine task, they didn’t just reduce them - they redesigned the process to eliminate them entirely.

Having won the Q2 Safety Guarantee Award, Team 2 – Potline 2 and Reduction Services at our Hillside Aluminium operation in South Africa have now been named the Annual CEO Safety Guarantee Champions for FY26.

Now at the end of its second year, the Safety Guarantee Awards recognise our people and teams who are driving real safety improvements in the workplace. By celebrating these stories, we can learn from one another and encourage more people to make safety improvements where they work.

In FY26, our base metals business drove strong earnings growth and shareholder returns. Strong operating performance coupled with commodity price tailwinds underpinned one of the best financial results in our history, with Group Underlying EBITDA increasing by 28 per cent to US$2.5 billion and Underlying earnings increasing by 55 per cent to US$1 billion.

Cannington and Sierra Gorda’s operating performance enabled the Group to capture the benefit of higher prices across copper, zinc and silver, supporting increased earnings and cash flow from our base metals business.

Copper is a critical mineral with a crucial role to play in our modern world. At the Sierra Gorda copper mine in Chile, 45% owned by South32, newly released figures have shown a 61% increase to the Ore Reserve estimate.

This increase represents an extension of the initial reserve life by approximately 5 years to 2045.

This update highlights the scale, quality and long-life orebody at Sierra Gorda, which we expect will be a significant source of copper for decades to come, and follows the approval in July to proceed with ex*****on of the fourth grinding line project at Sierra Gorda, which is expected to increase copper production by approximately 30 per cent from 2031.

We recently marked the second anniversary of Worsley Alumina’s 30-kilometre conveyor being officially recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest single conveyor belt in 2024.

The record holding belt joins up with another 21-kilometre belt to transport bauxite approximately 51 kilometres between Worsley Alumina’s Boddington bauxite mine and Collie alumina refinery. This remarkable feat of engineering helps reduce road transport and heavy vehicle movements, improving safety on local roads.

Originally opened in 1983, the conveyor passes through 22 tunnels and over 10 bridges, continuing to play a vital role in safely and efficiently moving bauxite every day.

A record worth celebrating and an innovation we’re proud to be part of.

Earlier this month, our Hermosa project in Arizona reached another important milestone when it received the Final Record of Decision from the US Forest Service. This completed the federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process needed for Hermosa's development onto adjacent federal land.

Pat Risner joined the Northern Miner podcast to discuss this key milestone, and Hermosa's experience as the first mining project covered under the US federal FAST-41 program, which coordinates how agencies review major infrastructure projects.

Some of the best safety improvements don’t simply make hazardous work safer, they remove the need for our people to be exposed to the hazard altogether. That is exactly what the Mobile Workshop Crew at our GEMCO operation in Australia achieved, earning them recognition as our Q4 Safety Guarantee Champions.

The team identified a long-standing ‘line of fire’ risk associated with routine maintenance and diagnostic testing on heavy mobile equipment. Traditionally, maintainers were required to work in close proximity to the machines, including 250-ton excavators, during live hydraulic testing, manually connecting pressure gauges and recording readings.

Rather than continuing to manage the risk exposure, the team of heavy vehicle maintenance fitters challenged the way the work had always been done and implemented a solution to remove our people from the line of fire.

The team redesigned the testing process by introducing wireless 'Safe Gauge' pressure transducer technology and digital indicator systems. This allows hydraulic pressures to be monitored remotely, in real time, from distances of up to 100 metres away. This solution enabled the team to eliminated exposure to a range of critical hazards, as well as improving efficiency by collecting multiple measurements simultaneously.

The team are now collaborating with our other operations so they can replicate the solution in similar environments.
