Quality assurance and quality control are phrases often used interchangeably, but it is worth knowing the difference. Using an example of sample crushing in the lab, we have explained them further below.

QA is everything we put in place before a sample ever reaches the crusher, such as:
- The procedure that defines our target particle size and how to crush samples properly
- The confirmation of the gap setting
- The cleaning procedure between samples
- The replacement interval for wear parts performed during scheduled maintenance.

QA is preventive and proactive, all the things we do to ensure there are no quality issues to start with.

QC are the checks done during/after the process to confirm it happened, such as:
- Sieving tests confirm the target particle size was achieved.
- Blanks run through the crusher confirm the presence of any carryover contamination.
- Duplicate samples to check the precision.

Crushing is often overlooked, but after sampling it can be one of the biggest sources of error in the entire sample preparation chain. Getting QA and QC right here matters just as much as what happens at the analytical stage.

It has been a busy year on-site so far for the AUTONOMA team. We have performed everything from robot replacements, to integrating new instruments into client labs, to rebuilds of process equipment in-situ.

Not to mention eliminating obsolete control gear by the complete replacement of electrical cabinets with the latest equipment, including the separation of low and extra low voltage to allow for quicker and safer diagnosis of the automation by the lab staff.

This highlights our growing capabilities across the mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines. We are very proud of the team we are building here, so watch this space for bigger things to come!

Decapping is one of the highest-repetition manual tasks in a sample prep lab. Several hundred identical wrist rotations per shift, with strain that accumulates over years rather than weeks, which is why it seldom presents as a single reportable event.

The exposure risk is less visible again. Every cap removed by hand opens a path between the sample and the person holding it. Acid mist, fine dust, solvent vapour etc.

Automating the decapping step removes the operator from both. The repetition transfers to the machine, and the sample stays enclosed. Throughput is usually what gets these projects approved, and that is reasonable, since it is the number that fits a business case. The wrists and the exposure are what keep the task on the safety register, and that side is harder to cost.

Accuracy and precision often get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

Precision means you get the same result every time. Accuracy means that result is actually right.

Imagine someone throwing darts. If every dart lands clustered together in the same spot, that's precision. But if that cluster is in the top corner of the board instead of the bullseye, it's precisely inaccurate. Now picture someone else whose darts land all over the board, scattered nowhere near each other, but if you average out where they all landed, the centre point sits right on the bullseye. This is accurate, but not precise.

Neither one on its own is worth much. High precision with low accuracy just means your mistake is consistent, which can actually be more dangerous, because it looks trustworthy. However, this can often be corrected for to make it accurate and precise.

Accurate but imprecise means you got the right answer this time, but you can't count on it happening again.
The goal is both at once: a tight cluster, centred on the bullseye.

Next time someone says a result is "pretty accurate" when they really mean "it doesn't change much," it's worth pointing out the difference, or ask them what they really mean. In casual conversation, they’re OK to use interchangeably, but certainly not in a laboratory or analytical setting.

A cracked crucible doesn't announce itself. It just quietly ruins your next melt.

We're bench testing an AI vision system right now that's built to catch what the human eye usually misses: hairline cracks, residue buildup, wear patterns that signal a crucible is on its way out.

Here's the problem we're solving. Crucible inspection is usually a quick visual check, if it happens at all, squeezed in between everything else on a busy line. By the time damage is obvious, you've likely already lost material, time, or worse, had a failure mid-process.

Our camera system is learning to spot dirty and cracked crucibles automatically, flagging problems before they become expensive ones. Right now we're deep in the unglamorous part: testing lighting setups, camera angles, and detection accuracy across different crucible types and damage patterns.

It's not flashy work, but it's the part that determines whether this actually holds up on a real production floor.
