Quality assurance and quality control are phrases often used interchangeably, but it is worth knowing the difference. Using an example of sample crushing in the lab, we have explained them further below.
QA is everything we put in place before a sample ever reaches the crusher, such as:
- The procedure that defines our target particle size and how to crush samples properly
- The confirmation of the gap setting
- The cleaning procedure between samples
- The replacement interval for wear parts performed during scheduled maintenance.
QA is preventive and proactive, all the things we do to ensure there are no quality issues to start with.
QC are the checks done during/after the process to confirm it happened, such as:
- Sieving tests confirm the target particle size was achieved.
- Blanks run through the crusher confirm the presence of any carryover contamination.
- Duplicate samples to check the precision.
Crushing is often overlooked, but after sampling it can be one of the biggest sources of error in the entire sample preparation chain. Getting QA and QC right here matters just as much as what happens at the analytical stage.
