Our Mine Emergency Response Competitions are about more than winning - they're about making sure our emergency teams are ready to tackle anything.

For more than one hundred years, MERC has been a training ground for teams to test their teamwork and rescue capabilities in realistic, high-pressure scenarios.

And it's an important way to strengthen safety on and off site, with teams often supporting local community emergency services at incidents like road crashes.

This year's competition brought together 14 world-class emergency rescue teams - check out some of the highlights 🔥

BHP has just announced its biggest ever community investment in WA.

In partnership with the WA Government, BHP will deliver $160 million to support major community infrastructure across education, housing and local facilities.

That means more homes for regional frontline workers, upgrades to Hedland SHS and a new aquatic centre.

Last year, our WA resources invested more than $70 billion in the local businesses, community organisations and facilities that keep our towns and cities strong.

This is another example of our members giving back to the regions and communities they operate in.

Across three action-packed days, emergency response teams will be put to the test in high-pressure scenarios spanning firefighting, first aid, search and rescue, rope work, and incident management.

Bobby Vyapooree arrived at Mineral Resources' Onslow Iron back in its early stages in 2022, and he's been part of the journey ever since.

As a Utility at Mungala Resort, he's turned his hand to just about everything - housekeeping, bar and kitchen - always with the goal of creating a home away from home for the site's 1,000-strong workforce.

“The difference is our facilities, our kitchen and our food and we have a great team working together here that’s like a family."

“We have people from different backgrounds and we all work well together, we understand each other and help each other."

That's the power of our resources sector.

And that’s a wrap! 🔥

From firefighting scenarios to confined space rescue, 14 teams from resource operations across WA went head-to-head at our 2026 CME Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition.

This was a massive weekend, with teams putting their skills, teamwork and grit to the test under intense, high-pressure conditions.

And it's not just for fun - these teams are often the first responders at major incidents on site, so it's critical they're prepared for anything.

Congratulations to this year’s winning team, Northern Star WA Operations KCGM, with Northern Star Thunderbox securing runner-up and Gold Fields Australia Combined placing third.

It was also fantastic to welcome the public back to the competition for the first time since 2022, with hundreds of spectators turning out across the weekend to watch the action unfold.
