In this week of NAIDOC we are pleased to announce the shirt design kindly developed by Les Hicks designs for NAIDOC. The front of the shirt is modeled by June Dhu CEO’s mother and Matriach of the family.
The turtle image of the one dreaming for Murujuga (Burrup) as the turtle returns there. The story is that when the turtle is young it makes its way out into the big wide sea. Out there it grows despite the challenges it faces from weather, predators and ocean currents. It remains strong, grows and returns home to where it was born to start the next generation who repeat the story.
The image on the back is the story of the seven sisters. From this story we get our discipline, how we carry our culture and respect our bloodlines. This gives us our skin groups so we know how we respect each other.
Both stories relate back to NAIDOC because the turtle represents youth growing into old and creation of the new generation. The seven sisters pays respect to the legacy of defining who we are as people.
