Meet our Senior Tailings Specialist – Nico Klopper

“I’ve spent my career turning tailings from a board-level risk into practical and manageable operations. I now apply that experience to reducing environmental liabilities through the design of fit-for-purpose, multidisciplinary tailings reclamation solutions.

By considering site-specific constraints and opportunities across the full lifecycle of tailings storage facilities, our designs prioritise whole-of-life costs and operational optimisation.

A strong advocate for “waste to value,” Nico has led the rehabilitation of legacy tailings facilities, transforming them into safe, productive assets that generate long‑term environmental, operational, and economic value.

Nico brings 19 years’ of global experience in tailings management across the full lifecycle of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), from site investigations and construction management to operations, closure and GISTM implementation, strengthening ESG and risk governance. As a hydraulic mining specialist, Nico has built and led multidisciplinary teams on complex mining operations, from concept and detailed mine design to steady-state operations, to deliver sustained operational performance and minimise risk.

Last week Agilitus sponsored the Sector Briefing: The Future of Energy event hosted by Business News , bringing together Western Australia’s energy transition leaders. Rhys Ledger, Rob Mondi, Jules Bird, and Stephen Brown from our energy team attended, and hosted a front-row table of clients from Woodside, Alcoa, Horizon Power, and Tesla Pty Ltd. Keynote speaker Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA, along with panellists, discussed WA’s energy future.

Western Australia’s energy sector is entering a new era, building on its strength in LNG and natural gas while rapidly expanding into renewables, hydrogen and critical minerals. Strong investment and new infrastructure are helping position WA as a major force in the global shift to cleaner energy.

According to Jules Bird, Project Engineer Energy Innovation, “The call to action was heard, with critical conversations around the energy transition, decarbonisation and understanding the important role each industry serves in maintaining a strong, resilient and world leading economy.

“We are already working across numerous projects in this space including hybrid BESS and Solar Owner’s Engineering support, Independent Technical Review for Solar Farm, Gas Plants and Hybrid Renewable Gas plants, as well as grid connected BESS and mining assets.”

“The best of my job is to talk to people from other disciplines, to work with them, to learn from them and to bring projects to successful completion.”

Meet Lucy, one of our structural engineers at Agilitus, who’s been supporting and driving projects through teamwork, for more than four years.

Meet our Discipline Lead – Adam Bartle, Ports & Marine

“Port resilience is crucial to the continuity of business, as well as to the communities and sectors that ports connect. In today's environment there is no magic formula to make ports more resilient overnight. Many efforts to strengthen port resilience focus solely on aging physical infrastructure, rather than planning for long-term port resilience.”

We offer expertise in the characterisation of marine site conditions to ensure existing assets are capable of withstanding future events with increased intensity and longer durations. At Agilitus, we provide planning, procurement, design and clever engineering services to design and deliver resilient ports.

Bringing 20 years of experience in Coastal and Maritime engineering, Adam’s technical work covers coastal infrastrucure design, project implementation, on-site supervision, and remediation of coastal structures, as well as dredging studies, tendering, and contractor management.

Meet our NSW Regional Lead – Robbie Rochow

“At Agilitus, we operate with a lean and effective business model which provides a unique competitive advantage. Leading our New South Wales office is an incredible opportunity to scale this across the local infrastructure, mining, and energy sectors.

We are here for the long term, and our focus is on further expanding our strong technical team to continue to deliver on our commitment to the region. As a Hunter Valley local, I am personally invested in building trusted partnerships, where we consistently add value for our clients.”

Robbie is a senior engineering professional with a strong background in civil infrastructure delivery. He has successfully been involved with complex scopes within the transport, mining and energy sectors, bringing extensive contractor and client-side experience.

Leading our New South Wales office, Robbie plays an integral role in building relationships and growing our East Coast client base. His project management approach is grounded in team performance, operational excellence and driving client-focused outcomes.

Since 2022, Agilitus has been working on the Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP) in partnership with Mid West Ports Authority (MWPA).

We were appointed as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) lead, where we adopted a whole-of-port approach to identify infrastructure expansion and improvement opportunities.

The design phase is complete, and through our partnership with MWPA we’re guiding the project into the next phase.

Mid West Port Authority CEO, Damian Tully said, “The big thing that really shines through is Agilitus understands us.”

“Sometimes clients can’t articulate what they want. We said we needed a tug harbour. Agilitus said, ‘we’ve got a solution for you, and we’ve also got a solution to reduce your surge issue.’ That wasn’t in our initial brief, but it’s now the most crucial part of the project.”

“In partnership with Agilitus, we’re delivering the best outcomes for the future of the Mid West Region,” he added.

Working collaboratively, building a strong working relationship, and understanding what our client’s need is fundamental to what we do. It’s what allows us to deliver something our client’s may not have considered but what will ultimately achieve the best outcomes for the project.

Members of our Agilitus team, Robbie Rochow, Regional Lead – NSW, Luke Lyons, Senior Engineer, and Shaun Reid, Senior Mechanical Engineer, had the opportunity to join NUChEs and UoN students on a port familiarisation tour, hosted by the Port of Newcastle. Our team shared their industry knowledge and practical learnings with emerging engineers.

Robbie said, “the team values our relationship with the Port of Newcastle and welcomed the chance to connect with future engineers while sharing insights about the port and marine engineering sector.”

“We’re always keen to discuss the work we do in the ports and marine environment, it’s a great way to connect university-based learning with the field.”

Thank you to those who helped organise and support the event. A special mention to Daniel Jones and Jonah Cass from Port of Newcastle for their efforts and initiative.
