Goldie going for it!
This paddock of Goldie dual purpose oat was sown on 9 May south of Wagga Wagga NSW, pictured here just 8 days later (top) and then 20 days after sowing (bottom). Goldie has high early vigour, and does well for both quantity and quality of hay.

Ember barley (left) alongside Goldie oats (right) south of Wagga Wagga NSW. Sown on 11 April, and photo taken 6 weeks later, shows excellent establishment of these varieties, as well as the prostrate growth habit of Ember compared with the high early vigour of the Goldie dual purpose oat which will mature with a tall plant height with good panicle emergence.

InterGrain has been on the ground in Japan, connecting with key end users in the premium udon noodle market.

Jayfred Godoy, InterGrain’s Udon Wheat Breeder (second from right), is undertaking official noodle sensory testing alongside representatives from Japanese flour millers Nisshn and Nippon, and Larisa Cato of Grains Australia.

We also officially launched in Japan this week, two new wheat varieties, IG-Quokka and IG-Collie, which represent the next generation of noodle wheat, developed to meet the exacting quality standards of this long-standing and highly valued market.

A proud step forward in supporting WA growers to deliver premium wheat, from paddock to plate.

InterGrain and Laconik are bridging the gap from trial plot to paddock. Last week, Georgia Trainor and Jack from Laconik were onsite to help seed wheat trials in Goomalling and Toodyay, comparing paddock-scale performance with current varieties. Variety trials are underway across Australia—we're looking forward to seeing the results!

Congratulations to Peter (pictured with InterGrain's Matthew Naumann) and Wayne Anderson of Oakey QLD, who were announced as winners of the Toowoomba Royal Showgrounds 2026 Irrigated Winter Crop competition with Jumbuck wheat. Grown in the 2025 season, Jumbuck yielded 7.254 t/ha. Peter said he felt there was further yield upside that could be achieved with the variety and plans to sow Jumbuck again in 2026.

Dr David (DT) Tabah, Senior Wheat Breeder at InterGrain, had an opportunity at last week's Grain Growers Grain Sustainability Forum in Sydney to talk about BNI wheat, a key trait that InterGrain's innovative wheat breeding program is researching and developing in partnership with JIRCAS, CIMMYT and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. BNI wheat makes nitrogen more available to the crop by reducing losses to the environment, enabling more efficient use of applied and stored nutrition. In turn, this offers potential for Australian farmers to increase yield and grain protein per nitrogen fertiliser unit available to the wheat plant.
