Nyrstar Australia - Port Pirie

Nyrstar Australia - Port Pirie Nyrstar Port Pirie is a multi-metals processing and refining facility in the Upper Spencer Gulf of South Australia.

Located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia, approximately 230 kms north of Adelaide, the Smelter has been in constant operation for more than 130 years. We are one of the world’s largest primary lead smelting facilities and the third-largest silver producer, which allows us to generate significant economies of scale. Our smelter is strategically linked to the Nyrstar

Hobart smelter through flows of by-products such as paragoethite and leach products. We provide the Port Pirie community with information on our site’s environmental plans and a commitment to genuine transparency. We invite you to explore our environmental consultation, ongoing reporting, and notification portal for access to real-time data at http://www.nyrstarportpirie.com.au/

Today, Pirie GM Darin Cooper held a joint press conference with Premier Peter Malinauskas, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis and Geoff Brock MP in Adelaide at the same time as Hobart GM Todd Milne was with Minister Tim Ayres and Premier Jeremy Rockliff in Hobart, announcing confirmation of Nyrstar Australia’s next phase of transitionary funding from the Australian, South Australian and Tasmanian Governments to progress its Australian metals modernisation program.

The AUD$105 million package will support Nyrstar Australia to progress feasibility studies for modernising its operations in Port Pirie and Hobart – including how they can expand production of critical and strategic minerals and metals – positioning them to compete in the next generation of global minerals and metals production and continue providing an important sovereign capability for Australia.

Speaking in Hobart, Minister Ayres described the importance of Australia building its position in critical metal supply chains which are so vital for information technology data centres and the digital and defence economies.

BHAS Dental Clinic turns 100! 🎂🎉

Whilst we couldn't get together for a Morning Tea on 100 years to the very day (March 24th), it was fantastic to get together with the BHAS Dental Board and friendly Staff today to recognise such a tremendous milestone.

In the present day, the clinic treats over 1,000 members who are current or former employees of ours, with their families also able to access subsidised dental care within working hours. This longevity and success are a far cry from the news of its formation in 1926, which was shrouded in speculative ulterior motives - how times change! Nyrstar are thrilled to be able to continue to offer the services of this dedicated team as a unique employee benefit in Port Pirie.

Employees or their families wanting to know more about this benefit should contact the Human Resources team.

Thanks to local cakemaker, Maureen Wauchope, and Trend Party Palace for helping us out with this morning's event.

Our operations experienced an incident onsite this morning that resulted in the loss of some power and the release of emissions that would have been visible to the local community.

There is no risk to the community or our workforce from this incident, and we have worked closely with emergency services to ensure the safety of our operations.

Some more really positive news from on-site this week, with Nathan Drummond - one of our apprentice Fitter and Turners, being nominated for ATEC's (ATEC - Adelaide Training & Employment Centre: RTO code 0022) First Year Apprentice of the year Award! 🙌

Nathan, having just entered the second year of his apprenticeship, is one of three finalists for the award and being recognised for his commitment, skill and dedication to his trade craft.

Apprentice Coordinator, Gary Curley, says: "Nathan has been truly outstanding in all aspects of learning his trade."

"This shows that our Apprentice Program is an outstanding opportunity for aspiring tradespeople in the region, with dedicated and passionate mentors."

Congratulations, Nathan! And good luck at the ATEC Training Awards evening at the Adelaide Convention Centre in late March.

"I'd like to thank everybody who has been on this journey to produce this metal here today - it is the first step for being able to expand our capacity and develop that sovereign capability in making critical metals for Australia," - Darin Cooper, General Manager.

Following production of the first shipment of Antimony metal, we are continuing to work closely with Australian and South Australian Governments on potential future expansion and modernisation of our multi-metals facility here in the Upper Spencer Gulf.

This morning, we proudly marked our inaugural production of commercial-grade, Antimony metal!

This major project milestone is an important first step toward Australia securing an independent and global mine-to-metal supply chain for critical minerals that are essential to industries such as defence, semiconductors, energy, and automotive manufacturing; and it exemplifies the strategic importance of Port Pirie in supporting the nation’s sovereign processing and manufacturing ambitions.

Our talented and dedicated team at Port Pirie have accelerated this project to this latest milestone with support from the Australian and South Australian Governments, and we are continuing to work closely with them on the next steps to further scale our Antimony production.

Having closed applications for our 2026 Operator Traineeship Program intake AND welcomed our new First-Year Apprentices earlier this week, we can also share that we have been hosting this group of five university students this summer as part of our annual Vacation Students Program.

These five budding, next gen Metallurgists or Engineers joined us before Christmas for their paid placement which included accommodation and will conclude their time with us in February, having completed a real-world project of their own during their time here.

To guide them through their projects and support them during their exposure to a heavy industrial setting have been senior Nyrstar team members Guillaume Reynaud (Principal Metallurgist) Damian Slattery (Senior Metallurgist) and Charlton Whitcher (Engineering Superintendent).

We hope you have enjoyed your time in Port Pirie, Jem Autio Parke, Prasun Sharma, Naveen Murugan, Eddie Ward and Lachlan Billing!
