No two conveyors are the same. Differences in conveyor design, material characteristics, loading profiles and operating conditions can all influence weighing performance. Achieving reliable long-term measurement accuracy requires a belt scale engineered around your specific application; an off-the-shelf solution is not going to do the job.

Application engineering considers the factors that affect belt weighing performance across the entire conveyor system. By understanding how the conveyor operates and how material moves through the process, a belt weighing system can be designed to account for these unique factors and deliver more reliable and repeatable results over time.

In a recent North American coal project, we found a legacy belt scale believed to be achieving ±0.25% accuracy was actually operating with between 9% and 16% error, directly affecting coal blending decisions. CST's site audit identified the root causes, redesigned the system around the application's actual operating conditions and delivered a guaranteed accuracy of ±0.5%.

A clear demonstration of why application engineering is so fundamental to successful belt weighing performance.

In mining, process control is the ability to monitor material flow and adjust operating conditions to keep production stable, efficient and on target.

The belt scale is the source of your process control data. When its measurement is unreliable, operators make decisions with incomplete information. Feed rates can drift, throughput can fluctuate and production reporting and inventory records can become less dependable.

CST supports stronger process control with application-engineered belt weighing systems designed around the conveyor, material characteristics and operating conditions. Accurate, repeatable data gives operators clear visibility of feed rates and material movement so they can identify variation and respond sooner.

The result is more consistent throughput, more reliable production reporting, improved inventory confidence and better-informed operational decisions.

Your belt weigher may be running - but is it still measuring accurately?

Mechanical condition, alignment and calibration can change over time. Small weighing errors can then affect production data, inventory reconciliation and the operational decisions that depend on them.

CST’s Service Division combines specialist field capability with OEM engineering knowledge, structured quality assurance and historical asset information to help keep belt weighing systems accurate and reliable throughout their operating life.

Our technicians service all brands of belt weighers, providing calibration, maintenance, fault diagnosis, technical support and performance upgrades.

Accurate weighing isn't set and forget. We maintain it for life.

CST will be attending Africa Down Under 2026 from September 2-4, 2026 at the Pan Pacific Perth, Western Australia. Representing CST will be Gregory Armstrong, Africa Business Development Manager, and Jonathan Webber, Business Development Engineer.

Africa Down Under brings together mining companies, suppliers, investors and industry leaders from Australia and Africa to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of Africa’s mining industry. As African nations push to move further up the value chain through sovereign processing and resource ownership, Australian expertise in mining technology and services has a direct role to play in making that transition work.

Gregory and Jonathan look forward to connecting with industry professionals to discuss how reliable belt weighing supports accurate production reporting, reconciliation and operational confidence across Africa’s mining operations.

Accurate material measurement underpins process control, production reporting, inventory management and commercial transactions. That's why belt scale type approval is so important.

CST's Precision Fully Suspended (PFS4) belt scale has received Interim Type Approval in South Africa, confirming that the system design meets regulatory certification, an important step towards onsite Legal for Trade verification.

For mining and bulk handling operations across the region, this provides greater confidence that measurement data is accurate, repeatable and compliant with local regulatory requirements. It also ensures these operations have access to belt weighing technology that maintains accuracy and performance in demanding site conditions.

Engineered for stability and long-term accuracy, the PFS4 delivers the reliable material measurement African bulk material handling applications depend on for operational and commercial success.

At the International Conference on Bulk Materials Storage, Handling & Transportation (ICBMH) 2026, CST's Joint Managing Director, Dr Ian Burrell, will present "The Twofold Problem of Belt Scale Accuracy".

Belt scale accuracy is one of the bulk material handling industry’s most misunderstood challenges. Ian holds a PhD in belt weighing and will be drawing on decades of research, engineering and operational experience to talk about what is misunderstood about belt scale accuracy and the factors that influence it. CST is proud to be home to the world's only two PhDs dedicated to this field and the opportunity to pass on some of that expert knowledge is invaluable.

ICBMH will be held at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle, Western Australia, from July 7-9 and Ian’s presentation will take place on July 7 from 3:55pm to 4:20 pm in the Sirius Room as part of the Belt Conveying – Monitoring and Diagnostics session.

If belt weighing is important to your operation, you should add this session to your schedule.
