🍃Let's talk about wind loading.
What looks like a simple banner can create significant forces on a pole structure.
In this example, the poles appear to be designed for security cameras, but the addition of a tensioned banner introduces extra loads from wind pressure and cable tension.

The result?
🔴 Increased structural loading
🔴 Potential pole movement and vibration
🔴 Reduced camera performance in windy conditions
🔴 A higher risk of long-term fatigue if loads exceed the original design intent

Steel is strong, but every structure has limits. That's why it's important to consider wind loading and attachment loads before adding banners, signs or other equipment to an existing pole.
The right pole for the right application matters.

Project Feature | Barlow Park, Cairns

At 56m tall and approximately 45 tonnes each, the lighting poles supplied for the Barlow Park upgrade are the tallest and heaviest lighting poles ever manufactured by GM Poles.
Located in Cairns, the project presented a unique engineering challenge due to the region's cyclonic wind conditions. The additional structural requirements resulted in significantly heavier poles designed to withstand the environmental demands while supporting the stadium's lighting system.
We're proud to have contributed to this important community sporting facility alongside Cairns Regional Council, i-LEC, Raylinc Lighting and Signify .

Recently, we welcomed members of the Best Practice Network to our Richlands facility for a morning of learning, discussion and industry insight.

The event brought together attendees from a range of industries to explore manufacturing, business improvement and the broader infrastructure sector, while also providing an opportunity to showcase the combined capabilities of GM Poles & Urban Aluminium across steel and aluminium infrastructure solutions.

Guests heard from the GM Poles team about steel pole design, manufacturing processes, quality assurance and project delivery considerations before taking a behind-the-scenes tour of Australia's largest pole manufacturing facility.

We were also pleased to welcome Brett from EOS Worldwide, who shared an introduction to the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS) and the role structured frameworks can play in improving alignment, accountability and ex*****on within growing organisations.

Events like these provide a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, connect with industry professionals and demonstrate how engineering expertise, manufacturing capability and design-led infrastructure solutions come together across both GM Poles and Urban Aluminium.

Thank you to Craig and Laura from Best Practice Network, Brett from EOS Worldwide , and everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions.

A fantastic result for Redland City FC Inc and the local community.

We're proud to have supplied the pole infrastructure for this project and to have worked alongside Electrical Services Queensland and the wider project team to help bring the upgrade to life.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

New lights have been officially switched on at John Edward Downie Sportsfield in Redland Bay, allowing Redland City Football Club to host night matches and training at their home ground for the first time. Last week, the GM Poles / Urban Aluminium team was in Melbourne for the National Sports & Physical Activity Convention.

A big thank you to Buckford Illumination Group and Signify for inviting us to join them on their stand throughout the event. It was a great few days catching up with industry colleagues, meeting new people, and talking about the exciting projects happening across sports, parks and public spaces.

It was also great to see the team from CME Group and connect with so many familiar faces from across the industry.

Thanks again to the Buckford and Signify teams for their hospitality and collaboration. We appreciate the opportunity and look forward to working together on future projects.

Wind Region & Terrain: Where Pole Design Starts

Before height, finish, or attachments are considered, site conditions come first.
Wind region and terrain category shape how a pole performs over its lifetime, influencing loads, deflection, and overall engineering requirements from the outset.
In practical terms:
🔵 Wind region defines the wind speeds a structure must withstand
🔵 Terrain category affects how wind behaves around the site
🔵 Exposure conditions influence loading and long-term performance
If these inputs aren’t clearly defined early, it can lead to assumptions that don’t align with real conditions, increasing risk during approvals, installation, and future performance.

For councils, consultants, and contractors, getting this right upfront supports:
🔵 More accurate engineering outcomes
🔵Alignment with relevant standards
🔵 Less rework later in the project

A structured approach to site conditions helps ensure pole design starts from a reliable foundation, not assumptions.
