When we noticed the roof rafters were a little spongy underfoot, we knew that "good enough" wasn't good enough for our clients.

A soft roof might seem minor now, but once plasterboard ceilings go up, that movement turns into cracks down the track — usually right when someone's up there doing routine maintenance.

So our team stiffened the rafters with laminated timber and 100mm C-channel to bring everything well within compliant spans, at no extra cost to the owners.

It's the kind of fix most people will never see or know about, but it's the difference between a ceiling that lasts and one that cracks in a few years.

Today we're installing cavity closers, the hidden detail that creates a drained, ventilated cavity behind the cladding.

This lets air move, water drain out, and any trapped moisture dry quickly instead of rotting your frame.

Most homes never get this level of detail around pipe penetrations, but it's the difference between a wall that breathes and one that quietly rots.

When plumbers and electricians cut raw holes through your weather barrier, water eventually finds its way in behind the cladding and runs straight into your insulation.

We use Pro Clima grommets to create a clean, sealed, pressure-activated seal around every pipe, installed on an angle so water sheds down and out rather than pooling in.

It's a small step that most trades in Central Queensland skip, but it's what stops moisture and mould before they ever become a problem.

Big ceilings move more than you think, and without support, that movement cracks your joints.

Back blocking is a simple fix. We glue small cement squares over the sheet joints as we go, locking them together for extra strength. It's easy to skip, especially where there's no batten directly under the joint, but it's actually required by the installation manual.

Skipping it doesn't always show up straight away; it usually shows up months later as a crack running along your ceiling.

A few extra minutes of back blocking now saves you a much bigger headache down the track. 🛠️🏠

Did you know waterproofing membrane thickness actually shrinks as it cures?

Applying it with a 3mil notch trowel creates ridges that roll out to roughly 1.2-1.5mil wet — but you'll lose about 35% of that as it dries.

That means the real target is a minimum 0.8mil finished coating, which is what waterproofing regulations require to actually perform.

Get the thickness wrong, and the membrane won't do its job, no matter how good it looks going on. That's why experienced applicators like Connor sometimes cut test patches and measure the cured thickness directly, rather than guessing.
