Three weeks ago I said this wasn't going to be a sales pitch. It still isn't, but I did want to leave the door open before we wrap this up.

We've covered after-hours automation, what internal database and quoting automation actually means, and this week, how to work out where to even start. No pitch attached to any of it, and that hasn't changed.

If any of it's got you thinking about your own business, and you'd like to talk it through with an actual person rather than keep guessing on your own, I'm around for a quick chat. No cost, no obligation, no follow-up call you didn't ask for. Just a conversation about where you're at.

If that's not you right now, that's completely fine too, and I'll keep sharing this stuff either way.

If you'd like to chat, send me a DM and we'll sort a time.

Here's a two-minute way to work out what to automate first in your business, no guesswork required.

Grab a pen for this one. Two questions, that's it.

First: what's the task that eats the most time or causes the most stress, week in week out? Not the biggest task, the most annoying one. For a lot of trade businesses that's chasing quotes or juggling who's doing what job when.

Second: of the tasks that came to mind, which one would give you the most relief for the least effort to fix? That's your starting point. Not the flashiest automation, not the one everyone else is talking about, the one that actually lifts weight off your week.

A mate of mine could have gone straight for a full customer database overhaul. Instead he automated after-hours text replies first, took an afternoon, and it's the change that's actually stuck. Start small, get a win, build from there.

What's the task on your list that's the biggest headache right now? Ask me anything about it in the comments, happy to think it through with you.

Most tradies don't skip automation because it's too expensive. They skip it because there's too many options and no idea which one to start with.

Ask around and you'll hear it every time. Not "I can't afford this" but "I don't even know where I'd start." Missed calls, quoting, job tracking, invoicing, follow ups, it all feels like it needs fixing at once, so nothing gets picked and nothing changes.

That's not a you problem. That's what happens when there are ten directions and no map. The businesses that actually get moving aren't the ones with the biggest budget, they're the ones who picked one thing and started there.

There's a simple way to work out where that one thing is for your business. We'll walk through it Wednesday.

For now, honestly, what's stopped you from starting so far? Too many options, not enough time, not sure it's worth it? Drop it in the comments, keen to hear it straight.

Genuine question for the tradies here: how are you tracking your jobs and quotes right now?

Notepad? Spreadsheet? Whiteboard in the shed? Pure memory?

No wrong answer, just curious how everyone's actually doing it.

Same job, two different weeks. In one, the quote goes out that afternoon. In the other, it's three days later because it got buried under everything else.

That's really all internal database and quoting automation does. It's not some big software overhaul. It's a way of keeping every job, every quote and every customer detail in one place your business can actually use, so nothing gets lost in a notebook or a memory.

Here's roughly what it covers: job and customer details live in one spot instead of scattered across texts and notes. Quotes get built from templates instead of starting from scratch every time. Follow-ups happen automatically instead of relying on someone remembering to chase it up.

What it doesn't do: replace you making the call on pricing, replace the relationship you've built with your customers, or force you into some big enterprise system built for a business ten times your size.

That's the bit worth saying clearly: there's a version of this that fits a two-person outfit, not just a big operation. Understanding it costs you nothing.

What's the part of quoting or job tracking that eats the most of your time? Ask away in the comments, happy to go through it.

Every trade business I've worked with tracks jobs and quotes a different way, and almost none of them chose it on purpose.

It's a notepad in the ute. A string of text messages nobody can find again. Half of it held in memory because writing it down takes time you don't have on a job site.

None of that's a failure. When the work itself is the priority, admin gets done however it fits. But it adds up. A quote that should go out the same day takes three. A detail gets remembered wrong because it was scribbled at the end of a long Friday.

I'm not here to tell anyone their system is broken. I want to understand what's actually happening day to day, because that's the only starting point that makes sense.

Curious to hear from other trade business owners here: how are you currently tracking your jobs and quotes? Genuinely interested in the range of answers.

This week's been about one thing: understanding, not selling. No offer, no pitch, just trying to help you get your head around where AI actually fits into a trade business, if it fits at all.

So here's Friday. Ask me anything: how it works, whether it's worth your time, where you'd even start, what it costs to run, whatever's been sitting in the back of your mind that you've never quite asked anyone properly.

Drop it in the comments if you don't mind others seeing the answer too, plenty of you are probably wondering the same thing. Or message me directly if you'd rather keep it between us. Either way, there's nothing attached to asking, no follow-up call, no obligation.

A job wraps up at 5pm. By 7, someone's sent a text asking about a completely different job. Nobody's checking the phone, because the day's actually done for once.

That message just sits there. By the time it's seen the next morning, whoever sent it has probably already texted two other tradies and gone with whichever one replied first.

Here's the one piece of AI automation worth understanding properly: it reads that 7pm text, replies straight away like a person would, asks the basics (what's the job, roughly where, how urgent), and has it all waiting for you in a clear message by morning. It doesn't quote anything. It doesn't decide anything. It just stops that text from dying of silence overnight.

That's it. No dashboard to learn, no new app taking up space on your phone.

If you've been wondering whether something like this is worth your time, or just want it explained properly with nobody trying to sign you up, ask away. Happy to talk it through, no strings.

Every "AI specialist" pitch sounds exactly the same right now: understand this first, then buy something, or buy this, then maybe understand it. It's exhausting, and I get why the second someone says "AI" to you, the wall goes up. You've already filed them as another bloke trying to jump on the bandwagon and get money out of you.

Fair call, most of the time.

I built TradeDesk to be more of an understanding tool for tradies than a sales tool. So this week there's no offer behind this post, no product, no pitch. Just straight answers if you're wondering where any of this AI stuff actually fits into your business, or if it even should.

What's the laziest AI pitch you've had lately? Comment below or flick me a message, keen to hear it.

21 times more likely to win the job if you respond in 5 minutes vs 30 minutes.

21 TIMES.

Most businesses respond the next morning; if at all!

That gap is where your competitors are picking up work that should be yours.

Our system responds in 60 seconds. Every time.
