Imagine being responsible for keeping the lights on for an entire island... with only one power connection. That's the reality for a utility serving Kökar, a remote island in Finland's Åland archipelago. If a fault develops, it's not as simple as sending a crew. Getting there takes hours by boat, and bad weather can delay access even longer. With no backup supply, every minute counts.

The good news? They didn't have to wait for an outage. Using Safegrid's Intelligent Grid System (IGS), the utility detected partial discharge activity early, pinpointed the exact location of a failing insulator, and replaced it before it could cause a power interruption.

As Safegrid’s partner in Australia and New Zealand, Insulect is bringing this capability to local utilities and remote networks, helping strengthen reliability, enhance safety, and build a more resilient energy future.

⚡Are unplanned outages and slow fault isolation affecting your network's reliability?

When switching equipment can't perform reliably under load, even a minor fault can lead to longer outages, increased safety risks, and higher maintenance costs.

Insulect's Gas Load Break Switches are designed to help utilities switch safely under load, isolate faults quickly, and restore power with confidence.

Designed for Australian conditions, they offer:
✅ Safe load switching up to 36 kV
✅ Reliable performance in harsh environments
✅ Manual or SCADA-enabled remote operation
✅ Flexible configurations for new and retrofit installations
✅ Designed and tested to IEC and AS standards

🏢 While Australia is debating how to power the rapid growth of data centres, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has released its 2026 NEM Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO), providing a 10-year outlook on electricity demand, reliability and the infrastructure required to support the National Electricity Market.

AEMO’s outlook forecasts data centre electricity consumption in the NEM to increase from around 5 TWh in 2025–26 to approximately 34 TWh by 2035–36.

Although the current political focus is “renewables or gas”, powering more data centres means greater demands on network infrastructure. For data centres, power quality and reliable connections aren’t optional. So, the “missing question” is: can the grid keep up?

The data centre boom is creating a new infrastructure challenge—and the electricity network will need to evolve with it.

🏢As the boom in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and hyperscale colocation continues to sweep across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), data centres are scaling at an unprecedented rate.

Underground HV and MV cable systems face hidden challenges, including sheath currents and transient overvoltages that can increase losses, generate heat and contribute to cable insulation damage.

Our latest article explores how Cable Link Boxes can help:
✅Improve cable performance and efficiency
✅Protect against switching and lightning surges
✅Reduce the risk of cable damage and unplanned downtime
✅Support safer and more reliable data centre power infrastructure

⚡ Every minute matters when there's a fault on the network.
As utilities navigate ageing infrastructure, renewable energy integration, and increasingly severe weather events, locating faults quickly and accurately has never been more critical.

Traditional fault location methods often require time-consuming field inspections and provide limited visibility, leading to longer outages, higher operational costs, and reduced network reliability.

⚡When the grid needs power at a moment's notice, there's no room for uncertainty.

Tallawarra B was built to respond fast, reaching full output in just 30 minutes to help keep the lights on across New South Wales during periods of peak demand or when renewable generation fluctuates. But operating at this speed also means every event and every change in power quality matters.

That's where came in.

By delivering a Qualitrol IDM+ monitoring solution, Insulect provided the visibility needed to capture faults, monitor dynamic disturbances, verify FCAS performance, and give operators the confidence to make informed decisions when every second counts.

Thinking about transformer retrofills? Here are 4 key reasons to consider ester fluids over mineral oil:
✅ Fire safety – much higher fire & flash points, reduced fire risk, no pool fires
✅ Environment – biodegradable with lower cleanup impact
✅ Installation flexibility – reduced separation distances (AS2067 compliance benefits)
✅Longer asset life – better moisture control helps slow insulation ageing
Ester fluids (synthetic & natural) like can also support higher operating temperatures and improved performance in the right applications.
