Ever wondered what actually happens when steel gets galvanized?

It's not just a dip in a zinc bath. There's a precise 8 step process behind every piece of steel that leaves our facilities. And each step matters.

Here's how we do it ⬇️

1. Degrease

We strip away any oils, grease, and surface contaminants that would stop the coating from bonding properly.

2. Rinse

A thorough rinse removes all chemical residues before we move to the next stage.

3. Pickle

The steel goes into a hydrochloric acid bath to remove rust, mill scale, and oxide layers, leaving a chemically clean surface.

4. Rinse again

Every trace of acid is removed before fluxing. Skipping this step would compromise everything that follows.

5. Flux

The steel is coated in zinc ammonium chloride flux, which protects the clean surface from re-oxidising before it hits the zinc bath.

6. Dry

The steel is dried in a pre-heat oven. This isn't optional as moisture and molten zinc don't mix safely.

7. Hot dip galvanizing

The steel is fully immersed in molten zinc at around 450°C, forming a metallurgically bonded zinc-iron alloy coating across the entire surface, inside and out.

8. Inspection and finishing

Coating thickness is measured, excess zinc is removed, and every piece is inspected before it leaves our facility.

The result is a coating that doesn't just sit on the surface. It bonds to the steel at a molecular level, delivering corrosion protection that can last 50+ years with zero maintenance.

That's the Furphy standard. Good. Better. Best.

From the first cut to delivery on site, our fabrication teams in Shepparton and Geelong manage every stage in-house.

Laser cutting, pressing, welding, finishing, and logistics is all coordinated under one roof and team.

But what particularly sets our fabrication services apart isn't just the capability. It's the integration.

When your steel is fabricated with us, it doesn't get handed off to a third party for galvanizing or coating.

It moves through our own network, hot dip galvanized to AS/NZS 4680, duplex coated or painted if required, and dispatched directly to your site.

For our clients that means no handover risk, inconsistencies, and on-site touch-ups.

We have 160 years of fabrication expertise, purpose-built facilities, and a team of engineers, welders, estimators, and operators who take genuine pride in their work.

Whether you need precise repeat manufacturing, OEM production, or a partner to relieve a bottleneck on a time-critical project, we're built for it.

Not every project comes with a standard specification sheet.

When a private client in Jindera, NSW set out to build their own chairlift, they needed a galvanizing partner who could work with unique, complex structural components and deliver a coating that would protect the structure for its full service life with zero planned maintenance.

Our Albury team provided full hot dip galvanizing services to AS/NZS 4680, achieving consistent coating thickness across all fabricated steel sections including internal surfaces.

When COVID-19 threw the construction timeline into uncertainty, we stayed in close communication with the client and worked around every delay to keep the project on track.

The result is a durable, corrosion-resistant finish built to last the lifetime of the structure, and a client who was thrilled with the outcome.

It's a good reminder that hot dip galvanizing isn't just for major infrastructure.

When the right coating matters, it matters regardless of the scale or nature of the project.

Some projects leave a mark on the landscape, and the communities around them.

In 2018 our Albury team worked alongside to galvanize the stairway and platform system at Morgan's Lookout, 46km north of Albury near Walla Walla NSW.

9.6 tonnes of hot dip galvanized steel. A structure built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions with zero planned maintenance. And a result that speaks for itself.

Following completion, visitation to the site increased by 450%. And public safety risk on site dropped from 95% to just 5%.

Named after local bushranger Daniel Morgan, the lookout offers visitors a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding countryside and a climb worth every step.

It's a good reminder that the right coating system doesn't just protect steel. It opens up places people might never have been able to access otherwise.

If you have an infrastructure or tourism project in a demanding outdoor environment, talk to our team about what hot dip galvanizing can do for your next build.

Three locations. One team. One standard.

Our facilities in Geelong, Shepparton, and Albury have long operated as specialists in their own right, but the strength of J. Furphy & Sons has always been how they work together.

Formerly known as Geelong Galvanizing, Furphy Engineering, Albury Galvanizing, and Furphy Galvanizing, our teams are now united under one name and one network, bringing the same mindset to every project, regardless of where it lands.

Whether your project needs stainless tanks & vessels, galvanized, painted, or fabricated steel components, you’ll be backed by the full capability of the Furphy network and a team that has been delivering quality Australian steel solutions for over 160 years.

One trusted name. One specialist network. Better steel products for a brighter tomorrow.

In 2022, our Albury team took home the Sorel Award from the Galvanizers Association of Australia, and the project behind it was anything but ordinary 🏆

The Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod project in Stanbridge, NSW required ten round floating aquaculture systems, aeration platforms, and winch trusses for an inland aquaculture operation.

The previous design relied on paint coatings and pre-galvanized steel sections. It was a system that came with ongoing maintenance demands and a limited lifespan.

By switching to hot dip galvanizing, the outcome changed completely.

A metallurgically bonded coating that requires no maintenance. A modular design that allowed for faster construction. Improved lifecycle cost. And a durability that paint systems simply can't match in a fully immersed freshwater environment.

The Sorel Award recognises innovative use of hot dip galvanizing across Australia and New Zealand, and this project is a strong example of what's possible when the right coating system is specified from the start.

If you're specifying steel for challenging environments where coating performance and lifecycle cost can't be compromised, talk to our team about what hot dip galvanizing can do for your next project.

You've probably seen it from the ferry. But here's what went into building it.

The Queenscliff Ferry Terminal is one of Australia's most awarded coastal buildings, and every bit of its internal structural steel was hot dip galvanized by our Geelong team.

The project was complex, requiring 170 tonnes of steel for a coastal environment with hard weather conditions, and tight construction window that left almost no room for delays.

Hot dip galvanizing was chosen because it's built for exactly this.

No cure time, no weather delays, no onsite touchups.

Just a coating that bonds to the steel and lasts.

With 20 years to first maintenance, the result is a building that proves hot dip galvanizing can deliver durability and architectural excellence in the same structure.
