When it comes to oils, don't be fooled, the brand name of an oil is only a consumer's choice to buy, But the OEM (Original equipment manufacturer) grade of oil (NOT BRAND) in the manufactures handbooks is the actual preferred oil specification you should use in your vehicle (SAE 30 or 15W40 for example).
In Australia, Dealers and manufactures cannot insist you use their preferred brand of oil to retain warranty, as long as you use the specified grade of oil (NOT BRAND) in your logbooks, the brand is purely a consumer's choice to buy and nothing more.
Understanding Oils - Weights and Viscosity.
Oil viscosity refers to the thickness or thinness of the oil and its flow characteristics at different temperatures. Engine oil bottles should display two numbers indicating its viscosity, for example, a 10W-40 oil, the “10W” represents the viscosity when cold, and the “40” indicates the viscosity when hot.
This can help with the selection of oil for cold temps versus extreme summer temps. Basically, a 10W-30 oil is thinner than a 20W-50 oil is.
So, if you own a car that was manufactured in a country that has far colder climates than our Australian climate, I'd double check what the OEM is and for what country, as our conditions are far more extreme here and need an oil that will protect the equipment in our conditions.
