Have you kept up with changes to the gas installation standard?

There have been two amendments since the major 2022 update.

The second amendment was published in September 2024 is now in effect.

All gas installation work must comply with the latest amended standard.

Key updates to AS/NZS 5601.1:

• Clause 5.2.11 provides clarity on active fire systems and references DIN 30652-1 'Excess flow valves for gas installations' as the standard that fire emergency isolation must comply with.

• Clause and Figure 5.2.12 clarify requirements for reversion fittings and specify that copper pipework must be extended from any wall outlet to 1 metre within the wall.

• Clause 6.2.4 now prohibits the installation of flueless space heaters in certain locations and introduces new flue clearance requirements from batteries and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

• Clause 6.9.3 and Appendix introduce new provisions for small gas-driven engine appliances.

• Clause 6.10.1.1 introduces provisions for down-draught extraction systems.

• Clause 6.10.9.5 clarifies when ventilation is not required for flame-effect fires.

Key updates to AS/NZS 5601.2:

• New definitions for ‘appliance’, ‘hazardous area’ and ‘living space’.

• Clause 3.1.8 and Figure 3.1.8(E) clarify measurement requirements for vapour barriers.

• Table 5.1.4.3, relating to materials for piping systems in caravans, includes multiple amendments to pipe, section and fitting limitations.

• Clause 6.3.2 provides clarity on stowed appliances.

• Clause 7.3.1 provides clarity on room sealed appliances and ventilation of living spaces, and introduces new requirements for annex ventilation.
