Planners and engineers at the table from the start: that was one of our big takeaways from the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Queensland State Conference in Cairns last month. Anita and Tonya enjoyed sessions on collaborative development design, environmental planning and CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). It was also great to catch up with Ian Darnell of Nspire on what’s happening in the Southern Downs.

Collaboration is how our office works too. Projects start with a bit of a scrum: planning, engineering and environmental factors are considered at the start. The only arguing left is Anita versus the interpretation of the planning scheme’s performance outcomes - that’s a discussion we’re happy to have on our clients’ behalf!

On Sunday Cam and Anita climbed Mt Beerwah with Green Valley Fingerlimes, then detoured to a subdivision Cam did the civil engineering on back in the late 1990s.

At the time Cam was working for Ken Crocker of Crocker & Associates. Ken was one of the first engineers to open a consultancy on the Sunshine Coast. He was also the Shire Engineer at Tenterfield many moons ago. A lot of what Cam learned about doing civil work came from Ken. They undertook civil work on many subdivisions on the the Sunshine Coast, such as the latter stages of Maroochy Waters and this one off Old Gympie Road, Beerwah.

This site sits in a flood overlay, so drainage was the main design challenge. Nearly 30 years on, the culverts and drains are clear and intact, the creek line is stable and well vegetated, and the pavement and kerb are still in good shape.

Infrastructure in a flood overlay has to work for decades, not just at handover. It’s good to see this one still doing its job.

When 800 cubic metres of solid granite is blasted out of a Ballandean hillside for w**e to sit in a temperature controlled environment... the result is impressive.

Twenty-five metres deep. Room for 250 barrels. Cool all year round without a single air conditioner, because that is what a granite hillside does.

C Consulting Group did the structural engineering for Meteora Vineyard's w**e cave, the cellar door sitting above it, the retaining walls and the curved stairs - and the trade-waste hydraulic design.

The cellar door is the part people photograph. Feature steelwork, tilt-up concrete panels, timber detailing and the foundation and slab design behind those polished floors, all resolved into one building. That coordination is invisible when you are standing there with a glass in your hand, which is exactly how it should be.

None of it happens without good trades. Builder Brubuild Pty Ltd, steel fabrication by Topfab Design & Fabrication, concrete by Webb Concreting, and every other contractor who worked on it.

Congratulations to the whole Meteora Vineyard team. It is a serious piece of work and a serious addition to the Granite Belt.

The first home at The Avenues is taking shape.

Construction has started on the first house at The Avenues estate on Sugarloaf Road, Stanthorpe, being built by Wes Smith Building.

We worked with the owners on the building drafting, soil testing, structural and foundation engineering, energy efficiency assessment and effluent disposal design.

Always good to see a project go from plans on our desks to a frame on site.

A striking coastal home - engineered for a seriously challenging site.

The Point Arkwright Residence sits on a compact block close to beachside vegetation, with bushfire and flood hazard overlays, a drainage and services easement, corrosive salt air and problematic sandy soil.

C Consulting Group provided the structural engineering, including framing, bracing, tie-downs, connection detailing, foundations and floor framing. We also completed the bushfire, energy-efficiency and stormwater assessments.

Structural steel forms the backbone of Norm Richards’ light-filled architectural design, allowing expansive glazing, natural breezeways and a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

A challenging brief, a highly collaborative team and a result we’re extremely proud of.

Full circle

Anita likes to tell the story about helping me out one time by wandering around a dam with a levelling staff and our 1st child in a sling on her chest. I was using a British made theodolite that belongs to my father. That technology, like my dad (former Director of Murray & Associates), is now retired. To be clear, although we do offer a wide range of services, surveying isn't one of them. Operating a small consultancy in Stanthorpe a couple of decades ago, we pretty much did whatever anyone asked us to.

Fast forward 19 years and our eldest lad is now surveying. Here he is running through a much more modern piece of equipment with our engineering staff on a development project in Stanthorpe. Most of the equipment these days only takes one operator, which is kind of a shame because it means you don't get to tell stories about the time your wife had to traipse around a dam all day with a baby strapped to her chest and a 4m long staff in her arms.

Meet James

A Stanthorpe local, James completed a double degree in Engineering and Business at QUT in Brisbane.

James’s hands-on experience in civil construction as a machinery operator, coupled with a background in agriculture on the family farm at Sweet’s Strawberry Runners, has given him a strong appreciation for how things work in practice, not just on paper.

James also has a bit of a green thumb and has helped add some life to the C Consulting office with our growing collection of plants. He’s pretty handy with the drone too (mostly!).

We recently asked James a few questions to get to know him a little better - here’s what he had to say:

What first made you want to become an engineer?
Growing up on the family farm and in the earthmoving business, I've always liked knowing why something is built the way it is: why a part sits where it does on an engine, or why a gusset goes on that corner of an I-beam and not the other. I settled on and finished mechanical, but mechanical work is thin on the ground out here, so I shifted to civil and structural (Thanks to Cam!). It was a much easier move than I expected.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?
I'm easily entertained. Bush walking, cards with mates, jamming on the guitar, water skiing and most things in between. But the pick of them is hard enduro riding.

What song would be on the soundtrack to your workday?
I think it'd be Ben Rector's cover of 'It's A Great Day To Be Alive'.

These projects have included a range of Queensland Government school and public infrastructure works, including accessible pathways, ramps and bathroom renovations at various State High Schools; and covered ramps and accessible classroom dividing walls at various State Primary Schools in the region

Living on the Granite Belt we are lucky to have lots of bushland and wildlife. Cam encountered these little critters on an evening walk last night. We often see echidnas but never have we seen 4 echidnas hanging out.
