Celebrating a quarter of a century!!

From little things…big things grow. Paul Kelly was on to something.

Starting with a seed sowed 25 years ago, it is humbling to reminisce about the achievements that this great company has achieved. Going back through photos of the body of significant and challenging projects reminds me of the successes and those who have helped me along this long journey.

Beginning with only the dream of buying my own machine and going out on my own with my loving wife’s support at a ripe young age to today being recognized as a national Plant Hire supplier with some of the most bespoke items of equipment available in the Plant Hire industry. With items on major projects of national significance up and down the eastern seaboard, it really is a young man’s dream come true.

The past 25 years have not been without challenges. This industry is evolving daily but as a group of companies, we made it, and we will continue to strive to achieve the best that we can for the industry and the significant projects we are privileged to be a part of.

Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without the support of so many people and companies. To our loyal clients, suppliers and employees, a thank you seems barely enough. Being called on time and time again by our faithful clients and Teir 1 companies is a testament to the relationships built and the confidence held in our company. I thank them all for their support, trust and the great journey we have been on together.

I look forward to the next 25 years (maybe!!) and continuing to work on some of Australia’s most significant construction projects!! Goodbye and Goodluck!!

Surface miner to fit your job. That’s new!

Often a surprise to clients, our Vermeer T1255 Direct Drive Surface Miner can be considered for jobs never before thought to be big enough to house a surface miner. Whether civil or underground tunnel works, this machine belies its size and is designed to work in tighter spaces than any other machine in its class. Although the machine is not dainty by any stretch, it is over 100T of machine after all, it has several things in its favour.

This machine can turn on itself within its 11.5m length. Sitting atop Caterpillar 375 double grouser tracks, there is nothing attached to the machine to stop its free movement. This is achieved by having the dust scrubber system located on the machine. By integrating this system, Vermeer have trumped their opponents by not only creating a bespoke system that is the best in class but removed all requirements for an external tracked scrubber unit.

This configuration has a multitude of benefits and most importantly of all, it is safer, with far less potential interactions with machines and the personnel required to operate tow behind units. It is a win, win situation for everyone and another reason why you should be assessing if this machine can complete your next job faster, better and safer.

Dust is everyone’s problem. Not anymore.

Innovation has been driven by the necessity to make construction low impact on all those involved, be that workers or localised residents. Noise, vibration and dust are at the top of every list and our surface miner addresses all three. Let’s focus on dust, the kind that blankets sites and their surrounds and does untold long term damage to the lungs of construction workers.

Rock extraction is always going to involve the creation of dust, so it then just becomes a management issue. Scrubber systems have come a long way but the leap from “tow behind” units to the latest onboard unit fitted to our Vermeer SSD Surface Miner needs to be seen to be believed. Having the unit mounted on the machine saves fuel, decreases the footprint of the machines required to do the job and most importantly, decreases the operators required to be in close proximity to these substantial machines.

The dust control on our machine is best in class for a particular reason. The direct drive specifically involves less moving parts and allows the drum to be isolated with a specially designed shroud that envelopes the cutting area. This enables the scrubber to do its job efficiently. It is simple, effective and only done properly on a direct drive machine.

Drums aren’t all made & powered the same in the world of Surface Mining

There are two types of drums when it comes to surface mining, chain drive and direct drive. Each have their own strengths but the new Single Side Direct Drive Drums are the latest and greatest tech and are proving more popular for those striving for high production rates and significantly reduced maintenance.
The direct drive drum is powered by a hydraulic motor mounted directly to the drum, not only does this power the drum directly (as the name suggests!) the drum is also able to sit closer to the tractor. This enables the weight of the tractor to be better utilised on the drum attachment thereby increasing its ability to pe*****te the rock by increasing its cutting weight.

Drums on Direct Drive units also allow the cutting tools/picks to be mounted in a much more aggressive formation on the drum itself. They are mounted well off the drum surface, reducing the friction compared to the chain drive, ensuring far less wear and tear and maintenance on the drum itself and better, more efficient breakout compared to the much lower profile setup on chain drives.
Direct Drive units have fewer moving parts and there are no wear and tear concerns relating to chains and sprockets which are responsible for all of the drive transmission in a chain drive unit. The increase in friction by using a chain drive makes the system less efficient. This also decreases the maintenance down time required to keep the Direct Drive unit in tip top shape. Less down time means more time cutting material on your job site.

Additionally, an important advantage is the shroud on the Direct Drive drum is able to much more efficiently cover and encapsulate the drum. This makes the onboard dust scrubber significantly more efficient than the chain and sprocket driven machines which are very limited in this respect.

Surface Mining – Material to go

As the name suggests, these beasts were initially utilised in the mining industry but from a civil construction perspective, these units make perfect sense in so many applications. A major advantage being utilised is the ability to effectively undertake excavation and crushing in a single pass with one machine. This eliminates the need for multiple pieces of plant, the requirement for a substantial footprint and lower CO2 emissions.

Whilst it depends on the type of material being cut, the excavated material produced by the surface mining process can often be used as a fill or aggregate material for use on other areas of the site or transported offsite for any number of uses without further processing.

There are a multitude of examples of excavated material from surface miners being used as the base or sub-base course on other road or civil projects where the material can be carted from one site to another, ready to be immediately used.

Our Vermeer SSD Surface Miner is operated by our skilled machine operators who are assisted by cutting edge technology. Included in this machine is the latest performance software which constantly monitors machine and operator performance.

While not running the machine completely, the systems ensure that each pass of the machine maximises its performance by making sure it is not going over previously cut material and monitoring the machines performance relating to the material being cut in real time.
Additionally, our machine is equipped with GPS and ATS systems. This enables our machine to auto steer, just load up the survey model and cut precisely to grade. This is enormously advantageous in most environments but particularly in haul road, ramp and decline excavations.
