If you're a licensed plumber in Victoria, the 1 March 2027 gas hot water deadline isn't just a compliance story for your customers. It's a significant pipeline of work heading your way.

From that date, when a gas hot water system in an existing Victorian home reaches end-of-life and can't be repaired, it must be replaced with an electric alternative, typically a heat pump. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0Wsz10) Replacing it with another gas unit is no longer an option.

There are roughly 1.7 million households in Victoria. A significant portion of them still run gas hot water systems, many of which are ageing. That work has to go somewhere. Plumbers who are ready for it, with the right product knowledge, accreditation pathway, and rebate access, will be in a strong position. Those who aren't will be referring jobs they could have kept.

Heat pump hot water installations under the VEU program and Solar Victoria's hot water rebate can bring the upfront cost down substantially for customers, in some cases by $1,400 or more when rebates are stacked. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0WsHh0) That makes your quote easier to sell and your customer more likely to act now rather than wait.

Energy Makeovers works with licensed plumbers across Victoria to access these rebates for their customers through our trade partnership program. We handle the VEEC accreditation and compliance paperwork. You do the installation. Your customer gets a better price and a better product.

If you want to understand how the partnership works ahead of what's coming in 2027, now is a good time to start that conversation.

VEECs get mentioned a lot in the energy efficiency industry. Less often explained is how they actually work and where the money comes from.

Here's a plain-English breakdown.

When an accredited provider installs an eligible energy-efficient product in a Victorian home or business, they create Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates. Each certificate represents one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions avoided compared to what the old system would have produced over its lifetime.

Those certificates are then sold to energy retailers, who are legally required to surrender a set number of VEECs each year to meet the Victorian Government's emissions targets. The retailer buys the certificate. The accredited provider receives the income. That income is what funds the upfront discount passed on to your customer.

So the flow looks like this: you install an eligible product, VEECs are created, certificates are sold to a retailer, and your customer pays less upfront. No voucher to chase, no rebate form to submit after the fact. The discount comes off the invoice directly.

VEEC prices are set by the market rather than the government, and they fluctuate with supply and demand. As of early 2026, prices have been trading in the mid-to-high $80s per certificate. (Source: Northmore Gordon, March 2026) That market price is what determines how large the upfront discount your customer receives actually is.

The more VEECs an activity generates, and the higher the VEEC price, the bigger the discount. That's why system type, size, efficiency rating, and the existing appliance being replaced all affect the final rebate figure.

If you want to understand how this applies to your specific trade work, we're happy to walk you through it.

If you're a sparkie, plumber, or HVAC installer working in Victoria and you haven't looked closely at the Victorian Energy Upgrades program yet, it's worth ten minutes of your time.

Here's the short version.
The VEU program is a Victorian Government initiative that creates upfront discounts on energy-efficient appliances, including reverse-cycle air conditioners, heat pump hot water systems, and insulation. Those discounts are funded through Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates, known as VEECs. Each VEEC represents one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions avoided, and they're generated when an accredited provider completes an eligible installation.

Here's what that means for trades: instead of quoting a customer the full retail price of a system, an accredited partner can apply the VEEC discount upfront, making your quote significantly more competitive than one that doesn't include it.
A single-head split system replacement can attract a VEU discount of up to $1,500. A multi-head or ducted system, up to $7,500. A heat pump hot water system, up to $1,500. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0WsdM0)

You don't need to become a fully accredited person yourself to access these discounts for your customers. Partnering with an accredited VEU provider like Energy Makeovers means you can pass on the rebate value, win more jobs, and let us handle the compliance paperwork.

More on how the partnership works in the posts ahead.

A lot of Victorian homeowners are going to be making the same decision in the next 12–18 months: what to do when their ducted gas heater reaches end of life.

From 1 March 2027, if your gas heating or hot water system breaks down and can't be repaired, Victorian law requires it be replaced with an efficient electric alternative. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0S8Gd0) That deadline is closer than it sounds, and with thousands of households facing the same situation at once, wait times for installations are going to increase.

The smarter move is to plan this upgrade on your terms — before the rush, before prices for installation spike, and while the Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts are at their most generous.

Right now, the VEU program offers a discount of up to $5,530 when you replace a ducted gas heating system with an efficient reverse-cycle air conditioner. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0S8Gd0) That's a significant amount off a system that will heat and cool your home more efficiently than gas ever did.

We handle these upgrades across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our team will assess your home, recommend the right system, and take care of the rebate paperwork.

Get in touch before the queue builds.

A question we get often: do solar panels lose efficiency over time? What about dust and dirt — does that matter as much as people say?
The short answer is yes, panels do degrade slightly over the years, but modern systems are significantly better than those installed a decade ago, and the loss is gradual, not dramatic. A well-maintained system on a Melbourne roof should be producing meaningfully for 20–25 years.

The longer answer involves a few things worth understanding: how degradation actually works, what genuinely affects output (shading, orientation, soiling), and what the efficiency ratings on panels actually mean when you're comparing quotes.

We've written about all of this on our blog. It's one of our most practical posts for anyone currently researching solar or wondering about the performance of a system they already have.

Worth a read if you're in either camp.

Something significant happened in Australian energy last year that didn't quite get the attention it deserved.

According to the Clean Energy Council's latest Rooftop Solar and Storage Report, 183,245 home batteries were sold in Australia in the second half of 2025 alone — more than the previous four years combined. The driving force? The federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which launched in July 2025, provides around a 30% discount on the upfront cost of an eligible battery system. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0S7Sq0) Clean Energy Council

For Victorian homeowners with solar already on their roof, this is worth paying attention to. A battery means the energy you generate during the day can actually power your home at night — rather than being exported back to the grid at minimal rates while you buy it back at peak prices.

The rebate is still available, but it steps down over time. The best value is for systems installed sooner rather than later.
If you've got solar and you've been wondering whether a battery makes sense yet, it's probably a better question to ask in 2026 than it will be in 2028.

We're happy to walk you through the numbers, honestly. No obligation.

Energy Makeovers started in Sunshine West back in 2008, when "energy upgrades" wasn't quite the household phrase it is today.

A lot has changed since then. Solar has gone mainstream. Heat pumps are replacing gas systems across the state. Insulation is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Battery storage is becoming genuinely viable for everyday households. And Victoria now has one of the most comprehensive energy efficiency programs in the country, running through to 2045.

What hasn't changed is who we're doing this for: Melbourne families, renters, small business owners, and regional Victorians trying to get a handle on their energy costs.

We're a local business. Our team lives and works in the same communities as our customers. And after 18 years, we're still learning, still improving, and still proud to be doing this work.

If you've been thinking about making changes to your home or business: solar, heat pump hot water, insulation, heating and cooling — we'd love to help.

The Quiet Cost of a Cold House

There's a kind of stress that comes with a cold house that we don't talk about enough.

It's the choice between running the heater and paying the bill. It's kids doing homework in their coats. It's elderly parents who don't want to be a burden, so they just... put on another jumper.

Energy efficiency upgrades shouldn't be a luxury. That's the whole point of programs like the Victorian Energy Upgrades; to make efficient heating, better hot water, and proper insulation accessible to regular Victorian families, not just those who can already afford to pay upfront.

We've been in this industry since 2008, working with families across Melbourne and regional Victoria. A lot of what drives us is simple: nobody should be cold in their own home because they're worried about the power bill.

If you're not sure what might be available for your household, we're always happy to have an honest conversation. No pressure, no hard sell.

With May already here, winter isn't far off, and this is the time of year when Victorians start thinking about whether their heating is actually up to scratch.

If you're still running an old gas heater or a clunky split system that costs a fortune to run, it might be worth knowing that the Victorian Energy Upgrades program currently offers discounts of up to $1,610 when you replace an existing gas space heater with an efficient reverse-cycle air conditioner. Replace a ducted gas system and that discount can be up to $5,530. (Source: https://ap1.hubs.ly/y0QHhB0)

Reverse-cycle systems are the most efficient way to heat and cool a Victorian home. One unit, year-round comfort, and significantly lower running costs than gas.

We've put together a blog post that explains exactly how the Victorian air conditioning discount works for 2026 — including what's eligible, how the discount is applied upfront, and what to expect from the process.

Worth a read before the winter rush hits.

12/05/2026

If your power bill has jumped recently, you're not imagining it. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, electricity costs rose 37% in the 12 months to February 2026. A big part of that figure is the expiry of government rebates that were keeping bills artificially low but the underlying cost pressure is real, and it's not going away.

The good news? Victorian households aren't without options. The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program is still running strong, and with the right upgrades in place, efficient heating and cooling, a heat pump hot water system, ceiling insulation, many families are genuinely insulating themselves from these rises.

We've been helping Melbourne and regional Victorian households do exactly this since 2008. If you're feeling the pinch and wondering where to start, a home energy assessment is often the best first step.
