Gallagher Studio

Gallagher Studio Gallagher Studio Urban and Landscape Projects is a Landscape Architecture studio based in Sydney, Australia.

DESIGN
We seek to unlock new design opportunities that respond to each project’s unique social, economic and environmental context. We approach each project as distinct and employ a rigorous and iterative process of analysis, research and exploration to unlock design solutions. We don’t prescribe a fixed outcome but rather seek to unearth and capture new possibilities, in order to develop designs

that are lyrical, appropriate and enduring. COLLABORATION
Collaboration is at the core of Gallagher Studio’s ethos. We draw together a range of professionals tailored to each project, in order to develop the most appropriate solutions. Our approach engages with multiple disciplines, from economists and social planners to artists, ecologists and engineering specialists. Our studio structure enables us to collaborate with the right specialists, while maintaining a core expertise in public domain and landscape design. INNOVATION
Our company develops projects that deliver definitive environmental and social benefits. We treat research as a core component of work and seek to apply this research into our practice. We draw on expertise from a range of fields including the climate and social sciences, engineering, built form and landscape architecture. Dr Libby Gallagher has undertaken innovative research into the design and delivery of high quality public spaces to address the dual impacts of climate change and the urban heat island effect in cities.

{AILA NATIONAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD WINNER}

💫 2022 AILA National Landscape Architecture Award for Landscape Planning

> NSW Urban Tree Canopy - Targets and Controls by Gallagher Studio and Studio Zanardo
> On Country - All traditional owners in NSW (NSW)

“One size does not fit all.” This work on achieving the targets for tree canopy cover in cities clearly demonstrates that one policy does not address all land use situations.
This simple project showed that to increase urban tree canopy cover, a nuanced approach is required that respects some key factors, such as the nature of the place and space for soil. By going beyond an analysis of the problem and testing the design solutions, the landscape architects took on the statutory planning to show how the planting could be more effectively codified.
The jury considered this an accomplished example of landscape planning. With more investment, it could be translated into a digital platform and used to inform other local governments grappling with this issue.

Congratulations to Gallagher Studio with Studio Zanardo for your award!

Gallagher Studio is pleased to have received a Landscape Architecture Award in the Parks & Open Space category at the AILA NSW Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Awards last night, for St Leonards Park Master Plan and Upgrade!

St Leonards Park, is one of the oldest parks in Sydney. It is a place of state significance and a rare example of a largely intact Victorian era park. In recent years, the park has come under pressure from increased demand, as people seek space for recreation, play, exercise, and respite. Together with North Sydney Council, Gallagher Studio sought to create a carefully crafted and sensitive master plan that would address conflicts, balance competing demands, and protect the park’s unique features.

The scheme for the first portion of upgrades, the Miller Street Forecourt, creates a new public space for circulation and gathering that reflects the unique park and sports field complex. A grove of closely planted palm trees provides a shaded screen to the street. New lighting highlights the building’s richly textured heritage façade while circular red benches and red ‘seamed’ tree grates pay homage to the many games of cricket played at the field.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Including:

The project calls for anyone to photograph examples of hostile architecture — from spikes on windows to bars on benches — and share the images on Instagram.

Manhattan’s Central Park has all the features of a great public space: It’s car-free, features a range of flora and fauna, and anyone can access it.

Libby and one of our Cool Streets Pilot Project residents, Bala, were interviewed by The ABC's 7.30 Report to talk about Cool Streets and the ways it is helping to tackle climate change at a local level. It is wonderful to see how the residents have embraced the new trees on their street, and that the trees are growing well with all the love and care from residents like Bala.

If you missed last night's segment, click through to the 7:30 Report's webpage to stream it online.

If you thought that 2017 was hot, you'd be right. Climate analysis shows that it was the third hottest year on record. Experts say we need to do a lot more to prepare for weather that keeps getting hotter.

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year from all of us at Gallagher Studio.
