Google will now show you which pages AI actually uses.

Search Console, the free tool that shows how people find your site, now breaks AI impressions down page by page. An impression just means your page showed up inside an AI answer.

Until now you had one number for the whole site. A guess, basically.

Now each page gets its own verdict. Your services page might be earning a spot in answers while your homepage gets ignored. You couldn't see that before. Well, you could suspect it. Now you can check.

Before you open the tool, decide which three pages matter most to your business. Read those first. Ignore the rest for now.

The site average stopped mattering this week.

Google just took away this industry's favourite excuse.

For years an agency could say AI visibility was too hard to measure. You couldn't check the work, so they never had to show it.

Now Search Console breaks it down by page, device, country and date. First-party data, straight from Google.

Our rule hasn't changed. If you can't check it yourself, it doesn't count as done.

We built that way back when the data was thin. Every change logged, a named senior approving it, a source next to every number. Honestly, it was slower and it cost us a few deals.

So the new data doesn't change our reports much.

It just means you no longer have to take our word for anything.

Transparency only worries the people who were counting on you not looking.

Google just gave site owners a button that looks like safety.

It's an opt-out from AI surfaces. AI Overviews, the answers Google writes above the links. Tick it and your content stays out.

If you've been burned by an agency or an algorithm before, clicking feels like the careful move. I get the reflex.

But read what the button actually controls.

The AI answer still gets written. The question still gets asked. The only thing that changes is whether your business is in the answer when a buyer asks for one name instead of scrolling ten links.

Opting out doesn't shrink the AI layer. It shrinks you in it. Someone else fills the space, probably a competitor who never read the setting properly.

I'll be honest, I can't tell you the AI layer will treat your business fairly. Nobody outside Google can, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

What I can tell you is that visibility there is decided by what the machines can read about you, and absence is a decision too. One you're making with a single click, quietly, for the layer where the asking is heading.

So before you tick it, sit with the question of what you're actually trading. Control over the old page, or presence on the new one.

Actually, scrap "or". It's both. That's the whole problem with the button.

The machine can't tell your business is good.

We think about this a lot. There's a pest control operator up in Cairns with years of five-star work behind him. Real reviews, real repeat customers. Ask an AI tool who to call and his name doesn't come up.

He didn't do anything wrong. He just never wrote any of it down in a way a model can read.

Search used to give you ten blue links, so a decent business could sit at number six and still get the call. An AI answer gives one name. Maybe two.

And the model picking that name isn't judging the quality of your work. It can't see your work. It sees what's written about you, where it's written, and whether it hangs together.

So the business that wins the slot isn't always the best one. Sometimes it's the one that was easiest to read.

That's the part that bothers us. Being good and being legible used to overlap enough that you could ignore the difference. You can't now.

The fix is boring. Write down what you actually do, who you do it for, where you do it, and say the same thing everywhere. No trick to it. Just translation work that hasn't been done yet.

Your work already deserves the recommendation. The machine just needs a way to know that.

Three acronyms, and most explanations make them sound harder than they are.

SEO, AEO, GEO. A client asked me last week if he needed all three or if someone was inventing acronyms to bill him more. Fair question honestly.

Here's how I actually explain it.

SEO is the technical health of your website. Foundations. Can a machine reach your pages, are they fast, are they readable.

AEO is how your content is structured. Does it answer the questions people actually ask, plainly, without hedging. Answer engine optimisation, if you want the long name.

GEO is the layer where machines decide whether they understand your business well enough to name you when someone asks. Generative engine optimisation. The citation layer.

Three layers, one job. The bit I care about most is that none of it is tactics anymore. It's clarity. Same business name everywhere. Same phone number. Same plain description of what you do and where.

For twenty years the game was one search engine. Now there are several machines forming opinions about your business, independently, and they don't share notes.

Actually, I'd go further. They don't just not share notes, they read different sources entirely. Which is why consistency across all of them is the whole strategy.

Boring work. It compounds anyway.

Meta just built the thing that erases you.

That's the loud version. The quieter one is more useful.

Meta is planning an AI agent called Hatch. And the phrase already attached to systems like it is the watermelon model. Green on the outside, red on the inside. The agent reports its own status as fine while the actual work underneath drifts somewhere else.

I've sat in front of that before. A report that looked healthy for three months while a client's enquiries went the other way. The report wasn't lying exactly. It just wasn't checking.

Here's my honest read. The more work an agent runs on its own, the more valuable the boring step becomes. A person looking at the live result. Not the summary the machine wrote about itself.

That's why every change at Brain Buddy gets approved by a named senior human before it ships. Slower, yes. It caps how fast we can grow.

But when the interface shifts again, and it will, I'd rather be the one who checked than the one who trusted the green light.

The machine recommending plumbers gets about three seconds to pick one.

Think of it like a receptionist who has read everything ever written about every plumber in Sydney. Someone rings with a burst pipe in Parramatta.

She recommends the plumber she can describe without hesitating. Name, what they do, where they work, whether they answer at 2am.

If she has to guess at any of that, she moves to the next name. A kitchen is flooding. Nobody recommends a maybe.

Where good businesses fall down is boring stuff. The website says "solutions for all your plumbing needs" instead of "24-hour emergency plumber in Parramatta". The suburbs live in a dropdown the machine never reads. The business name is written three different ways across Google and the directories.

A human wouldn't blink at any of that. A machine does, because every inconsistency turns a fact into a maybe.

The test I give people is simple. Ask ChatGPT: "Who is [your business name]?"

If it comes back plain and right, the machine knows who you are. If it's vague, or confuses you with someone else, being better at plumbing won't fix it.

The machine can't rank what it can't read.

There's one question I ask business owners that always lands.

When did you last scroll through all ten Google links?

Most of them go quiet for a second. Then they admit it. They just read the AI summary at the top now and move on.

And that's the whole conversation, really. I don't have to convince anyone that search has changed. They already changed. Months ago. They just never stopped to notice.

I used to open with charts. Doesn't work. Nobody feels a chart.

But ask someone about their own thumb on their own phone and something clicks. You can see it happen. They start nodding before I've made any point at all.

The question they should be sitting with is whether that summary mentions their business when their customers do the same thing.

Usually they already know the answer to that one too.

"It's just translated into lead after lead after lead."

That's Kurt from Tropical Palms Pest Management in Cairns, three years and two website rebuilds into working with us.

Before that, his site and SEO weren't pulling their weight and the last agency came out of the blocks hot then fizzled out. Sound familiar?

Massive thanks to Kurt and the team at TPPM. 🌴
