Canning pressed metal ceiling at the Buena Vista Hotel, Mosman.

The Canning pattern uses a structured panelled repeat, with texture through the centre of each section and more defined detailing around the edges.

Across a full ceiling, that repeat creates a strong sense of rhythm without competing with the rest of the room. Here, the darker surface and warm bar lighting bring out the relief differently as you move through the space.

A good example of pressed metal working as part of a complete hospitality interior.

Heritage pressed metal ceiling restoration at a private residence in Exeter, NSW.

This project involved several existing pressed metal ceilings across the home. Our role was not to install new ceilings, but to prepare the existing metalwork, treat areas of rust and repaint each surface.

The carousel shows two of the ceilings before, during and after the restoration work, followed by several other completed rooms throughout the property.

Each ceiling had its own pattern, layout and existing condition, so the work was approached room by room while retaining the pressed metal already in place.

Pattern of the Week: Newington

Newington is a bold pressed metal pattern with ornate floral detail and plenty of depth. It works particularly well across larger feature areas, where the full repeat can be seen properly.

Although it’s a natural fit for heritage interiors, Newington can also add character to more contemporary spaces. These examples show it used across ceilings, feature walls and splashbacks in both residential and hospitality settings.

The Mercantile Hotel, The Rocks — restored and reopened.

We’re proud to have been part of the recent restoration works at this iconic Sydney venue, carefully removing, restoring and reinstalling original pressed metal ceiling panels throughout the building.

The project involved a detailed process behind the scenes — from panel removal and documentation through to rust treatment, restoration works and reinstallation — with the goal of preserving the venue’s original character while preparing it for its next chapter.

It’s always rewarding to see historic detail brought back to life in a working hospitality space.

Pressed metal has been part of Australian architecture since the late 1800s, and it’s still one of the most versatile decorative finishes today.
