What if building soil carbon could also help soils hold onto nitrogen?

In collaboration with The University of Queensland, a soybean trial found that CarbonBuilder™ increased both total soil nitrogen and the amount of nitrogen stored in stable soil aggregates:

20.2% higher total soil nitrogen
56.2% more nitrogen in stable soil aggregates

By helping retain nitrogen in the soil, CarbonBuilder™ has the potential to support nutrient availability beyond a single crop.

As Dr. Vijaya Singh from The University of Queensland explains:

“We could see how the fungal inoculant not only increased grain but it increased carbon in the soil.”

Research like this continues to build our understanding of how beneficial fungi can influence both crop performance and the soil beneath it.

Yesterday our Loamies came together in Orange for the Loam Summit to align on where we’re heading and how we continue to move our mission forward.

Our new CEO, Rob Hranac, kicked things off, setting the tone for a day of ambitious thinking and meaningful discussion.

We explored how we can continue evolving our offering to deliver greater value for growers and help them navigate the challenges and pressures facing agriculture today. All while ensuring every decision we make moves us closer to our purpose: removing gigatonnes of atmospheric carbon and storing it in agricultural soils.

It was a valuable opportunity to step back, look at the bigger picture and align on what comes next.

And as always, it all comes back to our ambition to use the world’s smallest organisms to solve the world’s biggest problems.

We teamed up with Western Sydney University to see what our fungi could really do underground.

In a wheat growth chamber trial, our Thozatella sp. isolate (the active ingredient in CarbonBuilder™ Wheat, Canola and Pulses) delivered results that stack up:

+9.4% more total soil carbon.
+20.8% more carbon locked into protected soil aggregates.
+20.9% better resistance to carbon loss during a simulated fallow.

Translation: this isn't just adding carbon to the soil, it's helping the soil hold onto it.

Dr. Yolima Carillo and her team didn't stop at the numbers, they dug into the "why":

"We also were very interested in.. the characteristics and we measured a lot of them that these fungi had that could be explaining the our observations for the soil carbon pools and its dynamics."

Tracing carbon's journey from air to soil, one atom at a time.

In partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and UC Berkeley, we're using a rare carbon isotope (¹³C) and imaging technology originally developed to study stardust in meteorites to track exactly how our fungal isolates stabalise plant derived carbon and store it in the soil, down to the DNA level.

Did you see our Wilkur trial results covered in this month's edition of North West Farmer Magazine?

The feature dives into our first-year data from the Wilkur wheat strip trial, where CarbonBuilder™ was applied at commercial scale across 10 field-length strips spanning just over 30 hectares.

The article also covers Steve Nicholson's project in NSW's Central West, where 881 hectares generated 4,867 tradeable carbon credits using CarbonBuilder™.

With our trials now running across 18 sites nationally, this is just the start - more proof points are on the way for broadacre growers.
