Ever heard of Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Ronald McNair, Guion Bluford?
Current events have touched all people in all communities as people are now fighting against injustice, and the space community should be no exception. It’s now an important time to reflect on equality and justice; equal treatment of one another and equal opportunities and equal recognition of achievements. The space industry is well known in the past for not recognising equality and justice, so it’s time to change that!
If you don’t know where to even start (on top of signing the petitions, going to the rallies), spread awareness and recognition in the community. I highly recommend if you haven’t given the book/film ‘hidden figures’ a read or watch start there 🚀 ✊, show support and ensure that the space industry recognises all space heroes regardless of race, as minorities often slip out of the textbooks. Black lives matter, and not only do they need to be safe in all communities, they need their justice and recognition for contributing despite the discrimination they face. Let’s break the cycle 🚀🛰 🌓.
Back in the days of the space race, "computers" were people — often women — who performed vital calculations. Hidden Figures tells the stories of the women who got some of the first men to space.
