For the past 18 months, Aquachem Solutions has worked alongside the Environmental Protection Authority, Principal Contractor Enviropacific and Cleanaway in the areas of hazardous chemical testing, classification and supervision of the waste assessment team.

The equivalent of 1.5 million litres of excavated hazardous packaged wastes including corrosive, flammable, toxic, oxidising, explosive and spontaneously reactive liquids sludges and solids were analysed onsite using spectrometry and photoionisation techniques. Furthermore, some of the dangerous goods uncovered included nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, peroxides, aluminium trichloride, solvent mixtures and PFAS.

Strict adherence to the EPA’s regulations relating to classification and waste tracking protocols were followed for each of the thousands of drums and IBCs processed.

The team of engineers, chemists and operators worked tirelessly in the remote Victorian location, at times, in demanding heat conditions using impermeable chemical suits, PAPR respirators and SCBA.

A great sense of team spirit and achievement was felt by all who contributed to the clean-up of such an expansive, precarious and technically challenging project.
