Interlock construction is a product of @ftguinternational vision to sustainable and achievable development within Nepal. It started with a young carpenter Nick Abraham 21 from Australia who came to Nepal post 2015 earthquake to help in the rebuild process as a volunteer for an organisation known as the shelter initiative. Having known that they werenβt a formally registered organisation he decided to volunteer with them anyway because their were no financial charges to volunteer with the organisation (A common occurrence in the charitable sector).
Upon arrival finding out that the group had disbanded Nick was left in somewhat of a conundrum, leave and not fulfill personal promises, donate the money to organisations in which he did not believe in, or stay and have a crack himself at making a tangible difference. And so the basis of the organisation From the Ground Up was formed.
Having started off in the village known as Ghumarchowk helping to rebuild a school for a small Tamang community he was introduced to a man named Damphu and Hitman, both of which he was taken aback by. Damphu a farmer with limited education, 3 beautiful daughters was doing all he could to support his young family and the most important thing to him was to be able to earn an income so that he could send his daughters to college in the future.
After months of operating the school build, completing a health centre construction project and seeing the dependency it created by just building for free or even providing the infrastructure through an NGO instead of having the government release the funds for the construction, Nick quickly realized that the best way to assist in the development of Nepal was to start a company that focused not on providing the infrastructure but focused on employment.
