The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)Competition has been hosted annually by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 2003, and includes over 200 universities globally. Synthetic Biology is the application of genetic engineering through creation of novel biological systems not normally seen in nature, by combining and improving on natural processes. The goal of the c

ompetition is to liken genetic engineering to creation of electrical circuits by using modular and interchangeable parts called BioBricks. Each project is an attempt to solve a real-world problem using these novel genetic technologies, and to contribute to a world-wide registry of standardised BioBrick parts.

It's nearing the end of mental health week here in Australia, is it a coincidence that it's the same as submission week for iGEM? Remember that in a stressful time like this, it's always best to take care of yourself! Take some time to relax and rest, cuddle a puppy or something, and don't be afraid to reach out if you need help.

Since March our team (Abi, Callum, Rokiah, Andy, Jeanne and Tom) has been working in our own time to develop Project EasyCloni for the international and open source synthetic biology competition, iGEM. We need people to send us, our project and our ideas to the centre stage of the 2014 Jamboree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As one of only 3 teams representing Australia (246 in total globally) we are determined to show the world that young Australian scientists are driven, innovative and are just as competitive as their European, American or Asian counterparts. The beginning of the end of the Down Under "brain drain" starts here and we need all your help!

Like our page and support the future of science! Our work-in-progress wiki page: EasyCloni How can you bring EasyCloni to Boston? EasyCloni is a fantastic project that needs to be shown to the world! By offering sponsorship and supporting our team, you will be helping a student-drive...
