Revisiting a favourite: a Newtown terrace, rebuilt for a growing family.

Chris & Megan loved their neighbourhood but had outgrown their home. So we kept the heritage façade and rebuilt everything behind it.

At the centre sits a custom light well, drawing daylight and fresh air deep into the floorplan. Upstairs: two bedrooms, a family bathroom and a playroom. Downstairs: open-plan living, a guest bedroom or home office, and a seamless connection to the outdoor entertaining area.

Recycled brickwork and standing seam Colorbond cladding give it an industrial character that suits the Inner West.

Twelve months on, “the quality of the build has been evident.”

That’s how Catherine describes living in her Coogee home through storms, heat, wind, plenty of parties and two young boys.

She also noticed how the site was run: tidy, friendly and considerate of the neighbours. And when a design challenge came up, Tomi found a way through it.

After she passed, he refused to sell the house. His kids thought it was about the memories. It was about the window.

They built the house in 1986. Young, newly married, and full of plans.
She only asked for one thing: a window above the kitchen sink, facing east. She’d grown up in a dark little flat and wanted to start her days in the sun.

It wasn’t in the plans. It meant moving the plumbing.

He said no. It was simpler without it. Not necessary.

The builder pulled him aside on site one afternoon. “You’ll stand at that sink every day for the next forty years,” he said. “Don’t build her a house. Build her the morning she wants.”

He gave in. Grumbling.

For 38 years, she made the coffee at that window. She watched the kids walk to school through it. She waved him off to work through it. On hard days, she just stood there with her eyes closed and her face in the light.

Now he’s the one who stands there each morning. Coffee in hand. Sun on his face.
His kids keep telling him the house is too big for one person.

He tells them he isn’t ready to give up the window.

A house is just walls and a roof until you live in it. The right builder sees the life that’s going to happen inside, not just the plans on the table.
