Prominently positioned within the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of Crows Nest, an old gem has been waiting to be revitalised.

Originally constructed in 1938, this beautiful building has been sitting in waiting, pollution from the busyness around it covering its once beautiful façade.

Magellan was asked to restore this majestic building back to its former glory.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience in the industry, the experienced team put together a plan to bring this old building back to life.

Applying a specialized solution to the brick surface and allowing it to pe*****te the surface, before applying high pressure water to thoroughly rinse and refresh the façade.

An important step in this process was protecting the windows from this procedure. Protective plastic was carefully applied to each window and meticulously removed afterwards to ensure the ultimate finish was achieved.

The end result was spectacular, with the quality of the original brickwork being revealed and accentuated.

To complete the building’s rejuvenation, a silicone seal was applied to windows to form a waterproof barrier, ensuring the longevity of this timeless building.

Magellan was recently tasked with installing a large banner for the iconic Australian fashion label Carla Zampatti.

This delicate job was completed via rope access, and involved lowering the large banner over the rooftop edge. The banner is meticulously pulled into position and aligned with the sail track.

Our experienced and highly skilled technicians make the overall process look seamless, making all necessary adjustments to provide a final flawless presentation ensuring there are no folds or imperfections visible.

The Prep Work
Team work was a must given the size of this impressive banner. Our technicians worked together to prepare the banner for installation and throughout all stages of the install.

Conclusion
The banner installation was a success and looks magnificent. Magellan has been changing the seasonal banner for 15 years.

Façade High rise Painting and Concrete Repair
When your building needs concrete repairs or painting, it’s time to turn to the experts. With over 20 years of experience, Magellan has the skills and experience to handle any situation.

Having recently completed a complete façade restoration, Magellan has the know how to get the job done.

Seeing the before and after photos reveals the immense scale of works required for this project, including the removal of over 400 litres of concrete, nearly 60m2 of render was patch repaired and over 150 lineal metres of sealant joints were replaced:

Remedial repair
• Substrate cracks were filled and the surface finished and prepared for painting
• Delaminated and drummy render was removed
• Where concrete spalling was present, corroded steel reinforcement bars were treated with structural
repair mortar containing corrosion inhibiting properties
• A bonding coat was applied and render was reinstated
• Suitable repair mortars were applied to reinstate surface finishes
• New control joints were formed through repaired sections
• Prepared all newly repaired sections for painting

Sealant and Control Joint Repair
• All defective sealant was removed
• Bonding surfaces were cleaned and primer applied for polyurethane joints.
• Foam backing rod was installed
• New polyurethane bead was applied to joint
• All allowed to cure before painting

Façade Painting
Preparation and painting used a three coat membrane paint system which included the following methods:
• Minor cracks were filled and area prepared for painting
• Surfaces were cleaned prior to painting with water at 1500psi medium pressure
• A primer or sealer coat was applied to repaired areas.
• Dulux, Acra Tex - Acraprime Solvent based primer was applied to all surfaces to
be painted
• Two coats of Dulux Acra Tex - Acrashield were applied to match existing colour scheme
• All Paint coatings were applied to Dulux specifications with brush and roller

Cladding refurbishment spotlight: Walker Street North Sydney

Magellan was tasked with a full facade refurbishment. This included removal of outer tiled facade, removal and treatment of concrete spalling and restoration and finally the application of new cladding. This process not only provided much needed maintenance to the facade, it transformed a tired building into a standout on the streetscape.

Magellan was recently tasked with a very delicate job at a very special building - St Mary’s Cathedral. The brief was to install Peal Boards into the central bell tower. These large boards were the backings for plaques which would name the bell ringers of celebratory bell ringing.

Standing in the Cathedral, one can’t help but be in ore of such a magnificent building. The architectural features are inspiring.

Looking up at the ceiling some 21 metres away, it’s easy to feel humbled by your surrounds and the enormity of the job at hand. For these peal boards needed to be pulled up thought a hatch in the ceiling and into the main bell tower room.

The Prep Work
To reach the central bell tower required a steep 120 stair climb up the original sandstone stairs.

Preparing to pull the peal boards up required rigging hauling lines through a heritage trap door system. This intricate door system comprised of 3 trap doors: the central bell tower flooring; the trap door between the ceiling of the cathedral and the flooring of the bell tower room; and finally the trap door which is the ceiling of the Cathedral

Scope of Works
Originally the scope of works was to pull four peal boards up through the trap doors into the central bell tower.

However, the scope of works changed slightly, as news travelled to those that work in the central bell tower that the hatch would be opened, and a new fridge and shelving was purchased.

For this was the second time in nearly forty years that the hatch had been opened and bell ringers needed to take the opportunity to remove an old fridge and replace with a new one.

Watching the old fridge carefully being lowered down and a new one being pulled up required much precision and skill, being that it was undertaken in such an historic building.

One of the challenges faced by the team was timing, for all of these works had to be completed between mass times and with pews being put back into the original position in time.

Conclusion
The job was completed within the time frame required and always ready for a challenge, the Magellan team were able to accommodate the request of the fridge and shelving using their expertise all before the afternoon mass.
