Power's gone out. Is it your house, or the whole street? 🔦

Two quick checks before you ring anyone:

1️⃣ Look outside. If the neighbours are dark too, it's a network outage — not your wiring.
2️⃣ If it's only you, open the switchboard and look for a switch that's flicked down. Flip it back up.

If it won't reset, or it resets and trips straight back off, stop there. Something on that circuit is faulting and it's telling you so.

Spring's nearly here, and the shed's about to get busy 🔌

Before you run another extension lead out the back door, a few things worth knowing:

🔸 Extension leads are meant for temporary use. If one's been running to the shed or the pergola for months, it wants to be a proper circuit.
🔸 Outdoor points need to be weatherproof rated — an indoor one stuck on an outside wall is a problem waiting for the first big storm.
🔸 Anything outdoors belongs on a safety switch. Wet ground and electricity don't forgive much.
🔸 Double adaptors stacked off one another is the classic way to overload a circuit.

Getting power out to a shed, garage, pergola or granny flat is a straightforward job for us — right cable, right protection, certificate at the end.

Hot water gone cold? Three things to check before you call 🚿

1️⃣ Look at the switchboard. Hot water usually sits on its own circuit — if that switch has tripped, flick it back up.
2️⃣ Check the timer or off-peak meter. If the system runs on a controlled tariff it may simply not have heated yet.
3️⃣ Have a look at the tank itself. Water pooling underneath usually points at the tank rather than the wiring.

If the switch trips straight back off, stop there and give us a call — that's an electrical fault telling you about itself.

Four easy ways to trim the power bill 💡

1️⃣ Swap old halogen downlights for LED — they use a fraction of the power for a comparable amount of light
2️⃣ Switch TVs and game consoles off at the wall instead of standby
3️⃣ Run the dishwasher and washing machine off-peak if you're on a time-of-use plan
4️⃣ Ease the aircon a degree closer to room temperature — the closer it is, the less it costs to run

Cold snap coming — three quick things worth checking tonight.

1. Plug heaters straight into the wall, never a powerboard. Heaters draw a lot, and powerboards aren't built for it.

2. Keep a metre clear around any heater. Curtains, washing, the dog's bed.

3. If the power trips when the heater's on, that's your switchboard telling you something. Get it looked at.

Takes a minute. Worth doing before the cold really hits.
