Last week was a busy one for WARD’s partnership with the Sydney Roosters!

Early in the week, Katrina Capelin and Lily Tindale presented at the second Sydney Roosters Junior Pathways National Rugby League CareerWise session, this time with the U17s Lisa Fiaola & U19s Tarsha Gale teams.

It was excellent to see the engagement of this group of young women in a careers session about construction, as WARD continues to encourage and facilitate pathways for women to enter the construction industry.

Thanks to the Roosters for having us and to WARD trainee and NRLW player Taneka Todhunter, for making a video for us to share!

Later in the week, WARD team members Nick Stama, George Mouzourakis and Joe O’Connor hosted a BBQ for the U17s Lisa Fiaola & U19s Tarsha Gale teams to mark the half way point of the 2024 season.

Last week, WARD's Jack Cahill and Adam McCarthy presented on construction careers at the first of the 2024 Sydney Roosters CareerWise sessions to the Harold Matthews and S.G. Ball teams at Matraville Sports High School.

CareerWise sessions are implemented by the National Rugby League to help players plan for life after sport. As part of the partnership with the Roosters, WARD continues to offer traineeship opportunities to complement football careers.

Across the business, WARD provides pathways, flexibility and understanding for commitments outside of the workplace.

Jack and Adam are joined by Sydney Roosters' Sheridan Hawkins and Will Hopoate.

Last Friday, WARD held its annual Safety Training Day, offering our team an opportunity to learn and develop in the domain of safety.

Safety is a key priority at WARD and it is important for our staff to get together to reflect on safety practices and applications!

We were also fortunate to have guest speaker Kate Cole OAM from Cole Health Pty Ltd join us for the morning with an important and informative presentation on Silicosis in the workplace, as well as WARD’s HSEQ Manager Kim Kitchen, who presented a powerful address on mental health and her involvement in the charity It’s Okay Not to Be Okay. We are grateful to both presenters for sharing their expertise with all our staff.

WARD is thrilled to announce one of our Sydney projects was recognised at the ecoforum/SustRem 2023 conference, held in Melbourne last week, receiving the Sustainable Remediation Project Recognition award.

Ecoforum is the industry’s major opportunity for professionals from around the world to gather and share knowledge and innovation in sustainable practices for the management of contaminated sites.

This complex sustainable remediation project was a collaborative effort by WARD with both outgoing and incoming site owners, community, consultants and EPA auditor. The site was extremely difficult to access, within an endangered ecological community and challenges of unprecedented rainfall, water quality and heritage components.

Thank you to the project’s Validation Consultant GHD and to the WARD team.

This award is an acknowledgement of WARD’s strong commitment to sustainability across all projects.

WARD was delighted to attend a very special night for the Sydney Roosters NRLW team last week, at their 2023 Awards dinner.

Although the Roosters were pipped for a spot in this year’s Grand Final, second rower and WARD employee Otesa P**e, photographed with WARD CEO Julia Ward at the dinner, has been a power-house for the team this year in the NRLW competition.

Congratulations to all the award recipients for 2023. WARD is a proud partner of the Sydney Roosters, recently extending this relationship for another three years.

To celebrate National Science Week, we are delighted to announce that Ward has had a Submission for Sustainable Remediation accepted as a poster for the 2023 ECOFORUM conference.

Congratulations to Ward’s Remediation Manager Richard Giles and the Environmental team. The poster will demonstrate the successful, sustainable and complex Jackson Place Landfill Remediation project, which was undertaken within a constrained and highly sensitive site, producing an aesthetically pleasing space with high ecological and recreational values.

In other science news, one of our delivery teams has used an environmentally friendly replacement for steel reinforcement in shotcrete called BarChip R65. This material is made with recycled materials delivering savings on embodied carbon emissions, as well as savings on rehabilitation works over the life cycle of the product.

From this change, a carbon reduction of 34% was achieved across the work, including a reduction of 3873 kg CO2, which is the equivalent of 24 hours of continuous driving or a round trip to Melbourne from Sydney.
