Goldfish may look small and cute in your home, but releasing them into your local stream or lake is a bad idea. Just ask Washington state.

Now that we’re back on site it means we’re back in the lab doing experiments!! Nothing beats the noise of students conducting experiments and making connections (maybe we had too much fun cause we got asked to be quieter by the class next door 😅)

Watch the first video to see some excited students explain the differences in the crystal growth 😉

I love our display wall inside my Robotics classroom! Our unit details are displayed on the back wall and we’re adding student work to it before we went into lockdown. This was the same lesson from my last post, but done in class not online.

I also love the giant design cycle wheel we have with markers to show students which part they should be up to to.

Unfortunately, it seems we won’t be adding to this wall any time soon but it was fun to make!

INTERACTIVITY
My classes are pretty dynamic in the classroom (I’m pretty extra and my students know it haha) so I try very hard not to lose the interactivity online. Using songs as timers for students to complete a task, using the chat and typing their responses while sharing my screen are some key ways I maintain engagement. And picking out students at random helps keep them on their toes 😉

Remote learning has paved the way for more independence in students and less reliance on the teacher. This particular student had not done any work in our 80 minute lesson (which is weird), but upon investigating I found that he had actually achieved so much more – authentic inquiry (the basis of science) and the demonstration of soft skills! And the best thing is that I learned something new too!

I’m a big believer that the curriculum shouldn’t dictate what we teach but should be the inspiration for students to ask more questions. So it’s been awesome watching students follow their natural curiosities and use the skills they learned in class to find their own answers, and communicate them well!

One of my NY resolutions was to run 5km without stopping. If you know me I am not a runner so being able to run 10km in 78mins (without stopping) is HUGE! 🎉 It was also great to be able to support the Leukaemia Foundation in the process.

My classroom theme again this year is “.discomfort” so there was no way I could preach it to my classes and not live it. This challenge took me out of my comfort zone but I’m very thankful I had an awesome training crew who helped me achieve this goal!

Looking forward to more “seek discomfort” moments this year ✨ @ Werribee Mansion Run

Melbourne Learning Tour 2021

I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to share about my journey with contemporary learning with the 2021 Melbourne Tour group organise by LEVNT. I went on the tour 2 years ago so it was fun to see the excitement as they saw all the things I got excited about too!

I’m so thankful for this community and how open everyone is to sharing their experience, advice and resources. And even more thankful we can do it in person again!

Any high school science, maths, design people out there - let me know if you want to connect ☺️ @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
