Fixed price or cost-plus — which one's actually right for your reno?
Fixed price is one number, agreed upfront. We wear the risk if costs move. Simple, predictable, and it works well when the scope and drawings are locked in before you start.
Cost-plus is different — you pay the actual cost plus a margin. More flexible, but you're carrying more of the risk if things run over. This tends to make more sense on jobs where nobody really knows what's behind the walls yet, like a lot of heritage work.
Neither one is "better." It depends on how certain your scope is before day one.
If you're not sure which one suits your project, ask your builder to walk you through it — and ask why they'd recommend one over the other for your specific job.
