Set up for success!

Late last year, our Trade Assistants Jesse and Adam took on the challenge to commence their Mobile Plant Apprenticeships. Here they are after their toolkits arrived at our Tomago workshop.
Jesse and Adam are signed up with RTO Major Training, who offer onsite training and assessment for our mechanical apprentices.

“Starting my first ever qualification seemed scary at first but there's so much support available. I'm excited to learn and become a qualified tradesperson” – Adam

“When the opportunity came up to start an apprenticeship, I put my hand up right away. I'm grateful I was selected and look forward to the years ahead” - Jesse

Two of our 50t Petitto Mules are heading to Kestrel in Central Queensland today, leaving our Tomago facility early to beat the Christmas and New Year transport embargo.

It’s been a big effort from the team, who’ve been working around the clock to get these machines prepared, certified and on the road in a tight window.

Kestrel is one of the world’s largest underground metallurgical coal operations in the Bowen Basin, and longwall moves there are major, tightly sequenced events. When the window opens, everything needs to be ready.

Longwall moves don’t wait, and good preparation makes all the difference.

Our Training Manager – Maintenance Ex*****on, Kerrina Christiansen and Training Coordinator, Ashlee Todd, recently attended the Supervising your apprentice or trainee workshop with Skills NSW.

The session provided valuable insights into:
✅ Effective supervision and coaching strategies
✅ The importance of communication in the workplace
✅ Working with training providers
✅ Addressing workplace bullying and harassment
✅ Supporting apprentices to meet their learning and development needs.

Kerrina and Ashlee both found the workshop extremely valuable in strengthening how we guide and support our apprentices. A key takeaway was the importance of regular check-ins to track progress and ensure apprentices feel supported throughout their training journey.

We’re also looking forward to including our supervisors and leading hands in upcoming workshops to further build capability in mentoring and supporting apprentices on site.

R U OK? Day 2025 💛

From Karara in WA, to Paget in QLD, Newcastle in NSW and many sites inbetween, our teams came together today to mark R U OK? Day.

Across sites, we held toolbox talks, BBQ's and coffee catch-ups. A few of our team even baked R U OK? cookies to share, with a little help from the CWA of NSW Terrigal Evening Branch.

We were also fortunate to hear from Carina Bates Beyond Blue, who spoke about mental health and shared her personal story about living alongside her “two sisters” anxiety and depression. Nigel Smith icare NSW also joined us, sharing how losing a limb changed his life and those around him, and reminding us how vital safety is in the workplace.

The message is simple but powerful - a conversation can change a life. Let’s keep looking out for each other, not just today, but every day.
