Good to see the yards at 'Ellbank' getting a proper workout.

The Burnham family at Boogal Cattle Co Brahmans ran their first steers through the upgraded yards this weekend, drafting for consignment to Dinmore.

Their feedback:

"The yards worked very well. Cattle were happy to walk around the race and it didn't feel small. We were really happy with how it all came together and the yard builders were also very impressed with the process and time saving by having a very detailed design."

The brief was to lift the capacity and flow of the existing yard without discarding what was already working. The existing loading ramp and a number of the existing pens were retained and the new system designed around them.

What went in:

Bugle-shaped forcing yard
Drafting pound
180 degree curved race
3-way race draft
Diamond yards through the pen system

The bugle and the curve do most of the work. Cattle move off each other rather than being pushed, and they can't see what's ahead until they're committed to the race. The diamond yards let stock be shifted between pens in any direction without backtracking, which is where a lot of time disappears in an older yard.

A detailed design done properly before anything gets cut means the crew on site aren't solving problems with a grinder. Every rail, gate and post is documented, so the build runs to plan and the hours go into the yard rather than into working it out as they go.

New yards at Struan between Roma and St George, Western QLD

By this time next week, they'll be handling their first mobs of cows and calves.
Here's what went into the design:

6-way pound draft with crow's nest — gives the operator full visibility and control when cutting cattle into multiple mobs. No guessing, no stress.

5-way race draft — efficient separation straight off the race without pushing cattle back through the system.

Serpentine race — keeps cattle calm and moving forward. They can't see what's ahead, so they walk on rather than baulking.

The whole yard is built around a big, open bugle shape — simple by design. When cattle can flow naturally, you need fewer people, less noise, and less time to get the job done.

That's the goal every time.
