Project Spotlight: Perkins Flat Road

Welcome to Perkins Flat Road! Our task was to review Perkins Flat Road's design, with a major focus on mitigating dust concerns for residents. We faced many unique challenges on this one, including large native trees and a significant 1800mm reinforced concrete pipe culvert which added complexity.

We conducted a comprehensive risk assessment following the Austroads Guide to Road Design, aiming to determine the safest road cross-section while minimising impact on surrounding native trees. The initial proposal for a 2-lane sealed road would have uprooted numerous native trees and extended the major culvert, necessitating headwall removal. Our alternative approach preserved the 1800mm RCP culvert, involving adjustments to pavement width and a single-lane bridge treatment. This solution not only addressed immediate concerns but also offered a sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

The project highlights the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation, creating a win-win for the community and the natural habitat. This project showcases our dedication to community well-being and environmental conservation by preserving native trees and opting for a solution that minimises disruption to the natural habitat.

- Site Visit Insights -

One of our Civil Designers, Warren Formella, recently embarked on a site visit to the Baker Street Cycleway in Toowoomba. He's making sure to get involved in the heart of our projects ensuring we continue to deliver great results. Here's a snippet of his experience:

"I went out to Baker Street Cycleway to inspect and measure existing on-road cycling facilities. I measured locations of existing surface features including trees and power poles to better understand their impacts on the project. Getting out to site gives me an appreciation of the scale of the project and provides situational context which can assist in delivering fit-for-purpose infrastructure designs."

Stay tuned for more firsthand insights into our projects, where professional experience meets local expertise.

Project Spotlight: Perkins Flat Road

πŸ” The Challenge:
HARO Civil Engineering was engaged to review the design of Perkins Flat Road with a primary focus on minimising dust concerns for residents. The site presented unique challenges, including the presence of very large native trees on both sides and a significant 1800mm reinforced concrete pipe culvert with hand-placed concrete, bluestone headwalls, wingwalls, and aprons.

πŸ’Ό Our Solution:
We conducted a thorough risk assessment in alignment with the Austroads Guide to Road Design. The objective was to determine the smallest safe road cross-section, considering both horizontal and vertical alignments, while giving paramount importance to minimising impact on the surrounding large native trees.

πŸ› οΈ Successful Remediation:
Converting the road into a 2-lane sealed configuration would have necessitated the removal of numerous native trees and an extension of the major culvert, requiring the removal and replacement of associated headwalls. To address this, we proposed an alternative approach that involved the preservation of the 1800mm RCP culvert. This approach required adjustments to pavement width and the implementation of a single-lane bridge treatment.

This solution not only addressed the immediate concerns but also provided a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. The project showcases the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation, resulting in a win-win scenario for the community and the natural habitat.

🌏 Community and Conservation:
This project exemplifies our commitment to community well-being and environmental conservation. By preserving the native trees and opting for a solution that minimises disruption to the natural habitat, we ensured a positive outcome for both residents and the environment.
