First day of winter, fresh slab poured. ❄️

What better way to kick off the season than with a major milestone on this build. From completed footings and boxing to a freshly poured slab, this project is now curing nicely.

Another exciting milestone reached 👏

Three more slabs poured and ready for the next stage of construction. It’s always great seeing these projects start to come to life from the ground up! 🏡🔨

Stay tuned as we continue making progress on these beautiful new homes.

In a previous post we displayed images of the initial preparations for polished concrete floors in one of our projects.

We can now show you the finished burnished concrete floors.
It has been an extensive process to get finished images you can see. This includes a mechanical grinding process with the addition of concrete hardeners and a penetrating sealer.

This finished concrete has a density of 2240 kg/m3 and when we expose the surface of the burnished concrete to the internal environment of the home, we can harness a huge storage of thermal mass to moderate the internal temperatures.

Throughout the same project most of the internal walls are constructed of Rammed Earth and Rammed Earth has a density of 2000 kg/m3, so these two construction materials result in a combined thermal mass of hundreds of tonnes.
This huge thermal mass acts as a thermal battery that will absorb, store and release energy to make this home comfortable all year.

And in the end, it just looks amazing.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

We at Geoff Gibson Homes are always trying to improve the environmental outcome of all our constructions, whether that be a bespoke urban cottage or a large commercial building, we are designing and building towards the reduction of the embodied energy of the build and reducing the ongoing operational energy of the individual projects. To that end the placement of additional thermal mass in many different forms works well in both reducing the initial embodied energy of our construction and reducing the ongoing operational energy of the building.

In an area like the Darling Downs where we have a great diurnal temperature range a well-located high thermal mass wall or floor can supply a battery of useful thermal storage to make your home more comfortable.

We have attached images of concrete floors being polishing on a project we have underway now. All the living areas of the home and the bedrooms will have a minimum exposure look. The huge mass of a home’s concrete floor and foundations when exposed in this way will act as a thermal battery, moderating the temperatures of the home all year. Warming in winter and cooling in summer.
