🛠️ How Asphalt Paving Works – A Simple On-Site Guide
Asphalt paving is when we lay down a hot mix of bitumen and stone to build strong, smooth roads. It’s the kind of surface you see on highways, town streets, and places with lots of traffic.
⸻
🚧 Step 1: Get the Area Ready
• The surface underneath (called the base) needs to be solid, clean, and level.
• Any soft spots or potholes are fixed first.
• We check that everything is ready — traffic control, plant, and people.
⸻
🔥 Step 2: Bring In the Hot Mix
• Asphalt comes in hot from the asphalt plant, usually around 150–170°C.
• It’s made of stone, sand, and bitumen all mixed together.
• The hot mix arrives in trucks and is kept hot so it stays workable.
⸻
🚜 Step 3: Lay the Asphalt
• A paver machine lays the asphalt across the road evenly.
• The paver spreads the mix at the right thickness and width, smoothing it as it goes.
• Behind the paver, the road is still hot — and this is when we start rolling.
⸻
🧱 Step 4: Roll It Flat
• Rollers (steel and rubber-tyred) follow close behind to compact the asphalt.
• Compaction gives it strength and smoothness — no rolling = weak road.
• Timing is important — we roll while it’s still hot.
⸻
🛑 Step 5: Let It Cool
• Once the road is compacted, we let it cool and harden.
• No cars or trucks allowed on it until it’s firm enough to handle traffic (usually a few hours).
• Final checks are done for smoothness and joints.
⸻
🔍 What Makes Asphalt a Good Choice?
• Strong & long-lasting – can handle heavy loads and traffic.
• Smooth & quiet – good for towns and highways.
• Great finish – looks neat, safe for cars and pedestrians.
⸻
⚠️ What to Watch Out For
• Mix must stay hot — delays can ruin the job.
• Base must be solid — asphalt needs something stable underneath.
• Safety is key – machines, hot mix, and traffic all in one area.
