What a privilege to travel to the remote PNG village of Kilalum, and volunteer my time to build a durable community shelter.
The build came with many logistical challenges but was an experience I will always remember. Thanks to Rotary International Geelong for donating the materials and the Katal family for the invitation and hospitality. The welcome and gratitude from community was truly humbling.
It was evident how much the community need and appreciate this structure. Seeing everyone chip in to help, from the women and children carting sand, rock and water for concrete and levelling the site, to the men digging the foundation holes, lifting steel columns and the eagerness to learn the methods. We went there to teach and help, and learnt so much from the way of life ourselves.
