🚨 Information Alert: Asbestos Identified in Coloured Sand 🚨

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has identified imported coloured sand products containing low levels of tremolite and/or chrysotile asbestos. These products are commonly used for arts, crafts, and educational activities and have been supplied in Australia.

Asbestos-containing products are prohibited from being imported into Australia. The Australian Border Force is investigating, and affected retailers are being directed to remove products from sale.

Confirmed and potentially affected products include coloured sand sold under the Educational Colours (EC) and Kadink (Officeworks) brands, as well as some products sold at Kmart and Target (including Magic Sand and Sand Castle sets). More products may be identified as investigations continue.

⚠️ Precautionary advice:
WHSQ recommends ceasing use of all coloured sand products immediately. Do not allow children or adults to handle the sand.

For residential advice, contact Queensland Health on 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

🚨 US FDA Withdraws Proposed Asbestos Testing Rule for Talc Cosmetics 🚨

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially withdrawn a proposed rule that would have required cosmetic companies to test talc-based products for asbestos.

Asbestos can naturally occur in talc and is a known cause of serious diseases, including mesothelioma. With the rule withdrawn, asbestos testing of talc cosmetics in the US remains voluntary, not mandatory.

This decision has raised concern among public health and asbestos professionals, as products used daily on skin may not be independently tested.

🚨 Don’t Guess — Get It Tested by a NATA Lab!

Asbestos can’t be seen just by looking. It hides in old building materials like wall sheeting, vinyl, glue, and pipes — and you won’t know for sure if something contains asbestos unless it’s tested properly.

That’s why the Queensland “How to Safely Remove Asbestos” Code of Practice 2021 says any suspected asbestos must be sampled and tested by a NATA-accredited laboratory.
✅ NATA stands for the National Association of Testing Authorities — they’re the official watchdog that makes sure labs test samples correctly and safely.

Why it matters:
🔹 Only NATA labs can legally confirm if a material contains asbestos.
🔹 Non-accredited test results aren’t recognised and could be wrong.
🔹 Incorrect results can lead to unsafe work, contamination, and serious health risks.

If you’re not sure about a material — don’t touch it, don’t guess.
👉 Get a licensed asbestos assessor to take the sample and send it to a NATA-accredited lab for testing.

Safe testing = safe people. 🧪💪

October is National Safe Work Month

This week, we’re spotlighting the importance of risk assessments and hazard identification — the critical first step in protecting workers from exposure to dangerous substances like asbestos and silica.

Asbestos can be found in thousands of building products used across Australia before 1990 — often in places you wouldn’t expect.

That’s why ASSEA developed the Asbestos Product Guide: a practical tool to help identify where asbestos might be hidden and reduce the risk of exposure.

Not sure if it’s asbestos?
Get it tested — and keep yourself, your team, and your workplace safe.

Asbestos and tax time – could you be eligible for a deduction?

Asbestos-related expenses for a property that provides you with an income may be tax deductible.

This may apply to commercial properties, rental properties or if your home is a place of business, and can include testing, removal and transport to a licensed disposal facility.

✅ Asbestos Management Compliance Campaign – Are You Ready?

Starting 1 August, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) will be auditing businesses operating from buildings built before 1990 or likely to contain asbestos.
🗓 Audit period: 1 August – 31 October
📍 Targeted areas: Statewide

These audits will focus on compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and relevant codes of practice, particularly around asbestos registers and management plans. Inspectors will take enforcement action where requirements are not being met.

âś… What should your business do to prepare?
✔️ Make sure you have a current asbestos register and asbestos management plan in place (Part 8.3 of the WHS Regulation).
✔️ Be ready to provide inspectors with:
• Your asbestos register and management plan
• Records of inspections by a competent person (per section 422 WHS Regulation)
• Evidence of clear identification and labelling of asbestos or ACM locations, where reasonably practicable

📌 Don’t wait – review your compliance now!
If your building was constructed before 1990, take steps to ensure your asbestos management systems are up to date before inspectors arrive.
